Delta Iota Chapter Pi Sigma Alpha is the National Political Science Honorary for undergraduate and graduate students. It was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas and has over 460 chapters in colleges and universities in the United States. The Delta Iota Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha at the University of Arizona was established in 1962. The goals of our chapter are to recognize outstanding achievement by students in political science courses and to increase the opportunities for students to have contact with their professors outside of the classroom. Members receive a certificate of membership from the society’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C., and they are eligible to purchase Pi Sigma Alpha mugs, tee-shirts, gold keys, and medallions (to be worn at graduation). Members are also eligible to compete for national scholarship awards, best undergraduate and graduate papers, and a one-year student membership in the American Political Science Association. In addition, each year some members gain valuable experience serving as officers and committee chairs. Our local chapter sponsors programs designed to give students access to political science department faculty and the opportunity to get to know other political science majors. In addition members receive e-mail notices of upcoming events in the department, such as the ongoing brown bag colloquium series. Each year the national organization of Pi Sigma Alpha, selects chapters for Best Chapter awards. Our chapter, Delta Iota, was one of three selected for a Best Chapter award, for the 2003-2004 academic year, in schools with enrollments over 15,000 students. |
