Minutes for Meeting of 02-12-97

Hi Ramblers!!

To all new members:

The Ramblers' Hiking Club is a non-profit organization. We do all
sorts of things from hikes and backpacks to community services!
There are no dues and everyone is invited to attend the meetings.
In general, all hikes meet in the parking lot behind the Park Student
Center and all meetings are held near the Cactus Lounge in the
Memorial Student Union. Hikes are also ranked on a scale of (A,B,C)
where C is for wimps.

For those reading this on hard copy, you can join the listserv by
visiting our web site at http://www.biocom.arizona.edu/~ramblers and
filling out the Ramblers' Listserv Form

Sunday. Meet at 12pm PSC. Bring plenty of water and supplies, it
might take ten minutes to get to the Tucson Convention Center!!. :-)

++++++++Past Hikes

There was a bushwack to McFall Crags this past weekend. Jon, Chris,
Erich, Ian, and ??? spent all day regretting they hadn't worn pants.
Only Ron was wearing jeans. :-)

There was a good deal of debate about Spring Fling. After talking
extensively about cost benefits and man-power, the issue boiled down
to just "do we need to devote time to this fundraiser?" The 'no'
party won by claiming that current fundraising activities will more
than pay for the meager necessities of the club. Spring Fling is
still a great idea, as everyone conceded, and will be planned for
next year. Hopefully this will avoid any penalties SF may impose.

In the meantime, if you have any time between classes today and
tomorrow, please stop by the CPN credit card booth. Just being there
would be very helpful, and if you're very eager, helping to sign
people up would be great. If CPN fills out more than 500 applications,
we will begin to get .50 for each one!

Loretta passed out this semester's phone list. If you would like a
copy contact Loretta (7956892) or me (6201223).

The Ramblers had a very special opportunity to meet the founding
president of the Ramblers' Hiking Club today. Mr Bill Price began
the Ramblers February 10th, 1945 with his then girlfriend, now wife,
Helen Stewart. At that time, the total University enrollment was a
little more than 2000 persons, and the campus was bounded by Cherry,
Park, 2nd, and 4th! Even Tucson was considered a town at 50,000
people! Paved roads were few and the cars were even fewer. For this
reason many of the hikes left from the University by foot or bicycle.

The very first hike that the Ramblers' went on was to 'A' Mountain.
Unfortunately, anything further was hard to do without taking a bus.
Though the club tried to petition the Dean of Men for recognition as
a club (and therefore access to University vehicles) the Dean replied
that most of these clubs spring up like mushrooms, soon to die. That
was not to be! Through a sort of de facto recognition with the help
of the Dean of Women, the club was recognized only if it could provide
two chaperones per hike if any women were present.

Mr. Price is excited to document the early history of the Ramblers
and has a number of pictures from the time he was here. He is now
living in Tucson 6 months of the year and in Colorado another 6 months.
He said, "I got here and here are these magnificent mountains and of
course I had to go out to them."

On behalf of the Hiking Club, we all thank Mr. Price for coming to
our meeting and sharing so much of the history of the club with us.
We can't wait to see you again!
