Hi Everyone! Welcome to/back to a great new year for the University of Arizona Ramblers! For over 50 years the U of A Ramblers have been trekking over the entire Western United States. Many of our members have many experiences hiking and backpacking all over the world! For everyone who is new to the Ramblers, this club is a great way to get to know Tucson and its surrounding areas and to meet many, many people!

As we went through the introductions at our first and second meeting, it is clear that there are many questions concerning the Club's structure, organization, guidelines, etc.. Hopefully this message will answer these questions. If there are any further questions, feel free to post a message to the listserv or call one of the exec. members. someone will answer you promptly! (See below for instructions on how to subscribe to the listserv and how to post messages.)

The Ramblers' Hiking Club is a non-profit organization. We do all sorts of things from hikes and backpacks to community services! There are no dues and everyone is invited to attend the meetings where future hikes are planned. In general all hikes meet in the parking lot behind the Park Student Center. This is on Park at the end of 5th. All meetings are held Wednesdays at 5pm near the Cactus Lounge in the Memorial Student Union. Usually in room 280-something. **For next week (9/10), the meeting will be in room 280** See http://www.biocom.arizona.edu/ramblers/rooms.htm) for UofA maps. Hikes are ranked on a scale of (A,B,C)

For those reading this on hard copy, you can join the listserv by visiting our web site at http://www.biocom.arizona.edu/ramblers and filling out the Ramblers' Listserv Form. Alternatively, you can send an Email message to listersv@listserv.arizona.edu with no subject, and a body which says: subscribe RAMBLERS Jane Doe ###-#### If you do not have an email account yet, please visit CCIT on Speedway and Mountain to set up an account.

Please note that the message is addressed to "listerv" without an "e". "Jane Doe" specifies your name and "###-####" is your number, which is optional. After you have sent this message you should get a confirmation letter from the listserv. You must send a letter back with the body "ok" and then you will be officially subscribed to the Ramblers listserv. This is important as all of our hikes are posted/announced there. Alternatively, you can visit Louie's Lower Level on the bottom floor of the Student Union for a hard-copy of the minutes. They are posted on the left hand side of the entrance on a bulletin board about 10 feet from the door. Please remember not to delete your confirmation letter from the listserv! It has all of the instructions you will need to post to the listerv, as well as how to delete yourself from the listserv if you should ever want to.

Anyone can lead a hike! The hike leader can announce their hikes at the meetings on Wednesdays or over the listserv. Please let everyone know where the hike is going, when it is departing, how long the hike will be in miles, what the elevation change will be (these let hikers know the difficulty of the hike), and what your number/email address is in case anyone needs to contact you. You may also want to mention any special necessities such as extra water, a rain coat, etc.. There is also a ranking system for hikes on the A, B, C scale. 'A' hikes are difficult and you should probably have some hiking experience before attempting them. 'B' hikes are average, and you should definitely have hiking boots for them. 'C' hikes are usually much easier. If you're sure you could walk to the Tucson Mall from the UA campus, you would easily do a 'C' hike.

All hikers should be aware that it is your responsibility to take necessary food/water/supplies with you on a hike or backpack. If you have any questions at all about what to bring, please contact us! We will try to answer any of your questions! Also, the only other monetary expense you should incur is gas money. Typically all hikes are carpools. Almost always there are enough cars for hikers. Before the hike begins each hiker pays the driver a portion of the gas money.

I think that takes care of most of the general information =) We sincerely hope that you have a wonderful time in the club! It is meant to be a recreational outlet, a great way to meet great people (because everyone in the Ramblers is awesome!), and a refreshing break from school! You should at no time feel obliged to follow more advanced hikers to the peaks of any mountains, or any further than you feel comfortable going. It is never a race. Hiking is a way to put yourself in touch with the real world again, not the bipedal counterpart of Speedway Blvd.! Anyway, these are some of the upcoming hikes. Hope to see you there! Have a great semester!
