Minutes for Meeting of 10-01-97
Meeting called to order at 5:05pm. All officers present.
LAST WEEK'S ACTIVITIES:
Paul & Erich hiked up to Elephant Head Peak in the Santa Ritas on Sunday. Erich said some of the hike was bushwhacking due to the lack of good trails.
They had an all day hike and returned after sunset.
Wolfgang went backpacking with Dave to Rocker Lake Saturday and Sunday. Wolfgang said the lake is filled in with gravel and sand now. They had
excellent weather for their hikes which took them from Pryce Canyon to the saddle to Baker Canyon and back to Rocker Canyon. Wolfgang said the trails
had been burned in a forest fire a few years ago and they were being overgrown.
Ross and I went to the Aspen Loop Trail on Monday instead of the Ventana Canyon Trail because of the heat. We were thundered and rained on. We
turned on a little known trail that took us to the back reaches of Summerhaven. From there we road marched the 3 miles back to Ski Valley and
the car. We saw 2 squirrels and a deer.
Erich protested the new toll on Monday Morning with about 10 members of Sky Island Watch.
The week before last, Dave and Steve took three days to hike in the Desolation Wilderness. Dave said it snowed on Sunday night, but was clear
otherwise. They hike about 30 miles or so. They passed by about 18 lakes and many streams.
NEWS:
Loretta has announced an opening for the Official Rambler T-Shirt Design Contest. Your idea should reflect what the Ramblers represent. Be
creative. Turn in your designs to Loretta as you get them. There is no set deadline at this time. The winning designer will get a free T-Shirt and the
satisfaction of knowing your design beat everyone else's!
Dave (8815982) has the Winter Student Conservationist Association (SCA) Volunteer jobs handbook. The SCA get students volunteer work to outdoor
government agencies that need help. Volunteers are paid a stipend for food and receive free housing during their "tour of duty." Ron said he worked
through that program over the summer and he had a lot of fun doing it. But he cautioned that you will have to depend on your own money for a lot of
stuff. He's also heard a rumor that the Forest Service will match what SCA gives you.
