A flyer was passed around about "Project S.O.A.R" (Student Opportunity for Academic Renewal). You can become a role model for an "at-risk" high school student and get paid for your time. For more information, call Cristina Polsgrove at 626-4922.
Loretta has a huge list of people who want to go to Rocky Point. If you are not on the list, but you do want to go, contact Loretta (7956892).
Kent told us a little about the caving expedition to Onyx Cave on the 19th of October. Next week he will have the permits at the meeting. If you are going, you MUST be at this meeting to sign the permit! Kent said you can camp out down near the cave with him if you like the night before. He's going the evening of the 17th, so if anyone wants to make a weekend out of it and hike in the area on Saturday, you're welcome to go. He said the entranceway is a bit of a tight fit. Then you'll be climbing up and down for a while until you come to a pit. You'll have to transverse this pit using a rope and a harness. You have to be comfortable with climbing as you'll be in the cave from 8-10 hours. A "buddy system" will be in effect for this trip (i.e. everyone is responsible for the person behind them) so that no one gets left in the cave. Things you'll need to take with you:
- Helmet with headlamp and chinstrap
- At least 2 other light sources (NOT matches, lighters, or candles)
- Jeans & T-shirt
- Carry a sweatshirt (If you stop in the cave, you will get cold).
- Plenty of food (simple carbohydrates) and water.
- Very small backpack (nothing fancy - it will get trashed in the cave).
Everyone will stick together and it'll be a lot of fun. It's a beautiful "Adult playground"
24-26 October one of Kent's friends is having an expedition to Rocky Point to do Windsurfing, Sea Kayaking, and Snorkeling. The cost is $75. For an additional $12 he will provide a campsite. Prices are per person and includes all instruction and all sailboards, kayaks, and snorkeling gear. Contact Kent (7950346) for details.
LAST WEEK:
Kent went to the Octoberfest on Mt. Lemmon last weekend. He said it's really pathetic. Plus he said he had to pay the new toll. He bought the pass for the rest of the year. (Which brought up the fact that I read in the Arizona Daily Star the day before the toll booth opened that there is a $100 fine for not having a pass displayed in the windshield if you park up there.)
Lemon Pools - Sunday - Loretta led 8 people through the brush for 8 miles. They hung out at the first pool for a while and saw a butterfly emerge from a cocoon! Then they decided to go to the Shower Pool. They found out the that vegetation is a bit rough. Then they took the long trail back in the dark. Good thing they had an extra light!
On Saturday, Wolfgang led a hike of 4 people to Florida Canyon. When they got to the saddle, 2 people decided to go to the peak of Mt. Wrightston, 1 decided to stay in the saddle, and Wolfgang decided to go to the springs. Near the springs, he saw his 4th rattlesnake since being back in Arizona (better him than me!). They all met back at the saddle at 330pm and finished the hike.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Kent (7950346) will be rock climbing in the Catalinas on Saturday. Probably at Windy Point, although he's not positive yet. Call him if interested.
Oct 11-12 (Sat-Sun) - Erich (6213994) is having a car camping expedition to the Dragoon Mts. He wants to see the pictographs on Sat, camp with the cars on the west side of the Dragoons and do a full day hike to the peak of Mt. Glenn (highest peak) on Sunday.
Loretta (7956892) will have a mystery trip on Sunday. Meet at the PSC at 1030am. She's rated it as a "C+" meaning is a simple hike. Bring water, camera, binoculars (optional), rain jacket, food, and $3-$5 dollars for gas.
Oct 14 (Tuesday) - Chris (3260040) will lead a hike on the Box Spring Trail in the Santa Catalinas. Hike leaves PSC @ 2pm.
Flandrau Planetarium is having laser light shows on Tuesdays (330pm), and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (830pm). The cost for students is $6.00. It runs through Halloween.
Oct 24-26: Rocky Point, Mexico. Loretta's plan:
- Wants to leave Tucson by 3pm.
Camp at caravan camp - showers are available for an extra dollar
- Spend most of the time at the beach
- She will have info sheet at next meeting. If you need camping gear, Loretta has Rambler's gear. 1st come, 1st serve.
- Passports are not needed for U.S. citizens. You will need a valid photo ID or Birth Certificate.
There're some Halloween activities in the area. Old Tucson Studios is having a Halloween Fling, and the Valley of the Moon (near Tucson Blvd) is also doing something for Halloween. We'll have more information on that at the next meeting.
That's all I have for you. Hopefully this week it'll all go through the first time!
Bill Frobe,
Secretary, Ramblers
