Information Concerning Deer Drive
Hi! My name is Chasa O'Brien and I'm doing a Master's in Wildlife Ecology.
I'm writing you to announce a deer drive I'm holding October 9 at the Walnut Canyon Enclosure
in the Three Bar Wildife Area near Roosevelt Lake. The purpose of the deer drive is to count the
total number of deer (mostly mule deer) and javelina within the enclosure (600 acres).
Ideally, we will have about 80 people spread out in a line hiking across the enclosure
(it can take 4+ hours). My project is studying the habitat use (burned/unburned) of mule deer and
javelina with coyotes present. A graduate student before me studied habitat use within the enclosure
without any large predators, so this will be a comparative study with that study.
I think I will be able to get transportation for anyone interested in the deer drive.
We will have at least one van leaving on Friday. People with that group will stay overnight (camping)
at the Three Bar Cabin (with a toilet, running water, and a good gas grill). Another van will leave
very early Saturday and return following the deer drive. If anyone prefers to drive their own cars
(maybe you want to hang around Sunday to hike Four Peaks, Parker Creek, or one of the many other
trails nearby), I am happy to provide directions. I would appreciate it if you would announce this
deer drive at your next meeting and refer anyone who's interested to my contact info below.
I would also be happy to attend your next meeting and bring pictures of the enclosure if you think
many people would be interested. Thanks for your time! Chasa O'Brien: (480)-218-0565 chasa@azonline.com ,
I have a box in Biosciences East Room 104.
