Minutes for Meeting of 10-13-99

Hello Ramblers!

Past Hikes

  1. Hanna lead the Mexico trip to the Pinacate National Park in Mexico, departing on Friday and returning on Sunday. They spent Friday night in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. On Saturday morning they drove into Mexico and checked out volcanoes, but didn't make it to Pinacate Pak, due to surprises, such as the flat tire, driving on the dirt roads. Besides this, the conditions were excellent.
  2. Wolfgang and a couple of other Ramblers went on a Deer drive on Sturday, which was near Theodore Roosevelt Lake and the Mazatzal Mountains. The views of the 4 Peaks, the lake, and the Sierra Anchas Mountains were excellent, and the weather was pleasant. Wolfgang counted 2 deer, 1 fox, 1 javelina, and 6 rabbits. In addition, a family of 8 javelina was also seen by the group.
  3. Joe went to Redington Pass near A-7 Ranch, which is a good place for winter hiking. He also saw a Gila Monster.
  4. Ross did a weekend trip in the Santa Rita Mountains, hiking up Mt. Wrightson, camping at Josephine Saddle on Friday night, and camping at Baldy Saddle Saturday night.

Future Hikes

  1. Liz is leading a hike to the Pinalenos, leaving on Saturday (10/16/1999) at 3:00PM. Will involve a car camp Saturday night and hiking about 11-12 miles on Sunday (possibly on the Acadia trail, involving a car shuttle). Important to RSVP, Liz at: crapoe@U.ARIZONA.EDU. Rated B+.
  2. Hanna is leading a camping/backpacking trip in the Lemmon Creek area, leaving Friday (10/15/1999) and returning Sunday (10/17/1999). RSVP with Hanna: hanna@U.ARIZONA.EDU
  3. BJ is doing a Bisbee 5K stair climb this Saturday (10/16/1999). He will be posting more information on the listserve.
  4. Ryan is doing a hike through a canyon, called "the Jug", near Theodore Roosevelt Lake, in the Sierra Anchas Mountains. It is about a 3 hour drive north of Tucson. Call Ryan to RSVP and make arrangements: ryan@bpa.arizona.edu. Rated A, and will involve some climbing.

Announcements

There are 2 events this coming weekend. The first event involves a presentation by the Southwest Center, concerning the Sonoran Desert National Park Medicine Show with Charles Bowden and Jack Dykinga. "This is your chance through Charles Bowden's words and Jack Dykinga's photographs to see the place of silence. Snatch the opportunity to finish the work of a century of Americans saving American ground, the final union of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range.

Discover why the park is a necessity and why no barriers exist for creating the park except our imagination." This Medicine Show will be Saturday, October 16, 1999 at 7:30PM. at the Duval Auditorium/University Medical Center, 1501 N. Campbell Avenue, Tucson. The admission is $5 (for the park fund). Tickets are available in advance at the Summit Hut, 5045 E. Speedway, and at the door. There is free parking at the UMC garage south of the front entrance to UMC.

The 2nd event is the Fall Plant Sale & Landscaping Festival at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. This event is from Friday (10/15/1999) through Sunday (10/31/1999) from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. The admission is free with the UA Cat card. Also there is a 10% discount on all merchandise with this card. To go there, take Oracle up to Oracle Junction, where you take route 79 north, through Florence, to Florence Junction. There, take Hwy 60 to the Arboretum, as if you were going to Superior, but not quite as far.

This is all for now. If anyone wants to make any additional announcements, the Listserve is a convenient place to do so. Meanwhile, keep Rambling!
