Welcome back Ramblers!
Announcements:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all
hikes is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Also, future meetings, for the semester, will continue to be held
in Forbes 307. Signs will be posted in case you forget!
3.) Information: Ramsey Canyon, which is in the Huachuca Mountains,
south of Sierra Vista, AZ., has been reopened. This is a very scenic and
interesting canyon, which is famous for its diversity of bird species and
other wildlife.
Past Hikes:
1.) Erich was at the big New Years Ramblers meeting and camping trip.
A total of about 60 people showed up. 23 people went backpacking to Weavers
Needle, of which 6 reached the summit and flew a kite at the top. This
trip was in the Superstition Mountains, east of Phoenix.
2.) Hanna and several others went to the Kofas and Castle Dome Mountains
at the beginning of the year. They saw several mines on the south end of
the Castle Domes. They also saw some windows and some vegetated areas.
3.) Wolfgang did a short hike in the Saguaro National Park East on
Sunday.
4.) Mat went skiing in the Santa Fe area of New Mexico, during the
break.
5.) Chris did a day hike in the Santa Ritas on Sunday.
6.) Joe did hikes in the Taos area of New Mexico, such as Wilson Mesa.
7.) Hanna also did an annual Christmas break count, in which they saw
and counted lots of birds, in the North Gila Valley, northwest of Yuma,
near the confluence of the Colorado and Gila Rivers.
Future hikes:
1.) Wolfgang is leading a hike to Saguaro National Park East on Sunday
(1/16/2000). Departure is from the Park Student Center @ 8:30AM. For those
living in the eastern part of Tucson, there is a 2nd rendezvous point @
9:00AM at the Douglas Springs Trail trailhead, which is located at the
end of Speedway Blvd. Contact Wolfgang: <wolfgang@u.arizona.edu>. This
is a good beginner's hike, through interesting desert scenery, and is rated
"C+".
2.) Liz is leading a trip to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, during
this 3-day weekend. Departure is on Saturday (1/15/2000), and the return
to Tucson is on Monday (1/17/2000). Please contact and RSVP Liz at: <crapoe@u.arizona.edu>
for more information and departure times.
If anyone wants to announce any additional hikes, please feel free to
