Hello Ramblers!
Announcements:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all
hikes is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Also, future meetings, for the semester, will continue to be held
in Forbes 307. Signs will be posted in case you forget!
3.) Information: Ramsey Canyon, which is in the Huachuca Mountains,
south of Sierra Vista, AZ., has been reopened. This is a very scenic and
interesting canyon, which is famous for its diversity of bird species and
other wildlife.
Past Hikes:
1.) Liz, Hanna, Kyle, and Andy did a trip to Organ Pipe National Monument.
They did 6 miles of bushwhacking in Grass Canyon and camped in Senita Basin.
They saw bats, mule deer, great sunsets, falcons, woodpeckers, and the
interesting plant life.
2.) Wolfgang led an 8.5 mile hike to Saguaro National Park East, in
which 10 people total went. They saw lots of interesting plant life, and
it turned out to be quite a sunny and hot day.
3.) Shawn did a morning day hike up Romero Canyon to Romero Pools.
Future Hikes:
1.) Joe Leisz is leading a drive up to Reddington Pass on Thursday (1/20/2000)
to observe the eclipse: For any interested, I'll be leaving from the Park
Student Center (roughly 4th & Tyndall) parking lot at about 6:30 to
head up to Reddington Pass to watch the eclipse. Bring whatever you'd
like to grill or drink -- I'm bringing wood and a grill, probably some
hot dogs and marshmellows and such. I'm planning to do more relaxing than
hiking, but if you want to ramble I'd recommend a flashlight. If anyone
has a good portable telescope that'd be cool too. Main part of the eclipse
is supposed to be 9ish, proabably be back by about 11. E-me if you need
more info... - Joe <jleisz@AG.ARIZONA.EDU>
2.) BJ is leading a hike to Wasson Peak on Saturday (1/22/2000) at
9:00AM. The meeting place is at La Paz Hall (602 N. Highland), and they
will be going up the Kings Canyon Trail. RSVP BJ <bcordova@AG.ARIZONA.EDU>.
Rated "B-".
3.) Dave is leading a hike up to Josephine Peak in the Santa Rita Mountains.
They will start at Madera Canyon, and, to reach the peak, it will involve
some bushwhacking. Rated "A-". Departure is on Sunday (1/23/2000) at 7:30AM.
Contact Dave: <pswantek@SPRYNET.COM>.
Party Time: Hanna's House: Friday (1/21/2000) at ~5:00PM. Location is
at 826 E. Lester (1/2 mile north on Park, turn left at Lester, on the south
side of the street, between Park and Tyndall). Contact Hanna: <hanna@U.ARIZONA.EDU>.
Additional information: This is an announcement concerning Baboquivari

>>Joe, I received this letter from a friend of mine that lives at the

>>of Babo. Could your hiking club be interested in helping to get it
into a
>>real Wilderness status?
>>
>>Subject: Baboquivari Peak Wilderness Management
>>
>>Dear Randy,
>> We enjoyed talking with you and your friends a
couple of months ago
>>on our porch below Baboquivari Peak, after your climb. I want
to alert
>>you that the BLM is beginning its management plan for the Baboquivari
>>Wilderness Area, and we feel it would be a very good idea for as
many
>>hiking and climbing members of the public to be heard as possible.
There
>>will be a meeting Saturday Jan. 22 from 10-2 at Mary Dill Elementary
>>School, 16350 W. Ajo Way in Three Points--the theme is "What are
the
>>Issues?" If you or anyone you know could possibly attend, that
would be
>>great. There will also be several later meetings, but their
dates will
>>be set at this one. For more information, contact Catie Fenn
at the BLM
>>(722-4289;or catie fenn@blm.gov). Or give us a call (293-6502).
Could
>>you please help spread the word among climbers, campers and hikers?
>>Thanks so much.
