Minutes for Meeting of 02-02-2000
Hello Ramblers!
Announcements:
1.) Future club meetings, for this semester, will continue to be held in
Forbes 307. Signs will be posted in case you forget!
2.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes
is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
3.) If anyone has any maps, hiking guidebooks, pictures, or other borrowed
items from "The Box", please contact Joe Leisz @ 621-9783 or e-mail:
jleisz@ag.arizona.edu, and provide him with a quick list of what
you've got, who you are, and when you are planning to return it.
4.) If anyone else wants to borrow stuff, see Joe after the meetings each
Wednesday or drop by his office (Forbes: Room 325) to check things out
as needed.
5.) There have been several requests to take people off the listserve;
however, nobody can remove you from the list except you yourself. Here
are some basic steps:
Step 1: Send an E-mail to: listserv@listserv.arizona.edu
Step 2: Move the cursor down to the body of the E-mail message
Step 3: Type "signoff ramblers" in the body (making sure you did
not type the quotes)
Step 5: Send the E-mail message
Old Business:
1.) Since there was a vacancy existing for the vice-presidency of the
Ramblers Hiking Club, elections were held. Liz has been elected as
the new Vice-President.
Past Hikes:
1.) Jon led a hike to the Little Rincons. 11 people went and 4 of them
made it to Hidden Pasture. It was an open basin with trees, granite
areas, and the canyon wall surrounding it.
2.) 6 people went on Dave's backpacking trip, which was a good loop, and
mostly off trail.
3.) Shawn and Jessica went to Madera Canyon on Friday, along a nature
trail. They saw lots of birds, such as Strickland's Woodpecker, and
deer.
4.) Hanna also went birding in Madera Canyon, where she saw some painted
redstar birds. They did hear some screech owls, and on Saturday night,
they saw a skunk.
5.) Joe Leisz led a hike up Pima Canyon, on Saturday, about 4.5 miles up
to the 2nd dam. 7 people went on that hike, and it was a nice warm
day.
Future Hikes:
1.) Wolfgang is leading a hike into Sycamore Canyon (near the border with
Mexico) on Saturday (2/5/2000) @ 7:30AM. The plan is to split into 2
sub-groups. The easier option (rated "B-/C+") involves hiking partly
down the length of the canyon. The more difficult option (rated "B+")
involves, in addition, continuation up another interesting side canyon.
With either option, it will be important to bring 4 liters of water.
Contact Wolfgang: wolfgang@U.ARIZONA.EDU.
2.) BJ is leading some hike on 2/20/2000 up Sabino Canyon to Hutch's
Pool and, possibly, to 7 Falls. Contact BJ:
bcordova@AG.ARIZONA.EDU.
3.) Jon is leading an over night backpacking trip into the Little Rincons
up to Hidden Pasture in a couple of weeks. Contact Jon:
jonh@U.ARIZONA.EDU.
4.) Ryan is interested in leading a hike to "The Jug" in the Sierra Anchas
later this semester. Contact Ryan: ryan@BPA.ARIZONA.EDU.
Miscellaneous Outdoors Information:
1.) Ramsey Canyon, which is in the Huachuca Mountains, south of Sierra
Vista, AZ., has been reopened. This is a very scenic and interesting
canyon, which is famous for its diversity of bird species and other
interesting wildlife.
2.) There is a web site (free), providing topographic maps of the US:
http://www.topozone.com
3.) There is other topographic information, along with statistical
information about routes to take, available. Check out the Hikes
Web Page on our web site or click on individual hike links here
in the minutes. Contact Steve if you want your hike mapped at:
sanewcomb@mindspring.com
4.) I came across another interesting web site for those, who are
interested. Check out Escape Adventures' new web site:

2/12/2000 @ 1:00PM to 3:00PM, concerning the Baboquivari Wilderness
plan. It will be located at the UofA Campus Agricultural Center, at
Campbell and Roger (in the multipurpose room on the left side of the
road). More information will be announced.
If anyone wants to post additional announcements for any hikes, etc.,
please feel free to use the listserve. Meanwhile, enjoy the mountains,
