Minutes for Meeting of 02-16-2000

Hello Ramblers!

General Announcements:

1.) Future hiking club meetings, for this semester, will continue to be
    held in Forbes 307. Signs will be posted in case you forget!
2.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes
    is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.

Slide Presentations:

1.) There is a slide show being presented at the Summit Hut on
    Thursday (2/17/2000) @ 7:30PM, where photos by Jack Dykinga will be
    presented.
2.) The Sierra Club is presenting a slide show: "Rafting in the Grand
    Canyon", on Thursday (1/17/2000) @ 7:45PM, in the Physics building
    (PAS Room 201). Admission is free.

Announcements Concerning Club Property:

1.) If anyone has any maps, hiking guidebooks, pictures, or other borrowed
    items from "The Box", please contact Joe Leisz @ 621-9783 or E-mail:
    jleisz@ag.arizona.edu, and provide him with a quick list of what
    you've got, who you are, and when you are planning to return it.
2.) If anyone else wants to borrow stuff, see Joe after the meetings each
    Wednesday or drop by his office (Forbes: Room 325) to check things out
    as needed.
3.) Ross Lampert is the new gear warden for the club, since Mike LeBlanc
    will be graduating in May. If there are members of the club, who have
    borrowed any equipments, such as backpacks, sleeping bags, stoves,
    etc., please inform Ross, so that arrangements can be made to return
    items.

Past Hikes:

1.) 6 people went on Kyle's hike on Sunday, up Sabino Canyon, to Hutchess
    Pools. They did 16 miles of hiking is 5 hours. They also saw a gray
    fox in Sabino Canyon.
2.) Ross did a 2-day car camp in the Atascosa Mountains near Pena-Blanca
    Lake. He also did a day hike down Sycamore Canyon. The night was a
    little cold.
3.) Chuck did a hike up Pima Canyon to Mt. Kimball for 13 miles.

Future Hikes:

1.) Liz is leading a day hike to Cohise's Stronghold in the Dragoon
    Mountains on Sunday (2/20/2000). Rated "B". RSVP with Liz:
    crapoe@U.ARIZONA.EDU, for the time and other information.
    (Additional information is being presented under a separate E-mail
    message).
2.) Jon is leading, but postponing, an over night backpacking trip into
    the Little Rincons up to Hidden Pasture for a couple of weeks.

3.) Plans for Aravaipa Canyon are for Saturday (2/26/2000), in which
    there are reservations for 10 people available. These reservation
    permits are free since volunteer work would be done in conjunction
    with the hiking/backpacking trip. The 3 volunteer projects involve
    removing fire rings and removing brush. Return to Tucson is on
    Sunday. Please RSVP with Andy: andy.odell@nau.edu.
4.) Hanna is leading a day hike to the Agua Caliente Hot Springs in the Santa Rita
    Mountains. Contact Hanna for details: hanna@U.ARIZONA.EDU.
5.) Ryan is interested in leading a hike to "The Jug" in the Sierra
    Anchas later this semester. Contact Ryan: ryan@BPA.ARIZONA.EDU.
6.) Liz is interested in leading a trip to Monument Valley, during the
    Spring break. Contact Liz: crapoe@U.ARIZONA.EDU.

Miscellaneous Outdoors Information:

1.) Ramsey Canyon, which is in the Huachuca Mountains, south of Sierra
    Vista, AZ., has been reopened. This is a very scenic and interesting
    canyon, which is famous for its diversity of bird species and other
    interesting wildlife.
2.) There is a web site (free), providing topographic maps of the US:

3.) There is other topographic information, along with statistical
    information about routes to take, available. Contact Steve:
