Hello Ramblers!

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.

2.) Future hiking club meetings, until the end of this semester, will continue to be held in Forbes 307. Signs will be posted in case you forget!

ANNOUNCEMENTS: CLUB PROPERTY:

Ross Lampert, the gear warden for the club, is asking that members return ALL borrowed equipment, since he is conducting an inventory of club property. It is important to contact Ross @ 325-5912, so that arrangements can be made to return equipment.

Joe Leisz is the librarian for the club, taking care of "The Box", containing maps, hiking guidebooks, etc. If anyone wants to return or borrow stuff, see Joe after the meetings each Wednesday or drop by his office (Forbes: Room 325) to check things out as needed, or contact Joe @ 621-9783 or E-mail: jleisz@ag.arizona.edu.

ANNOUNCEMENT: RAMBLERS T-SHIRTS:

A decision was made at today's meeting, concerning this year's Ramblers Hiking Club T-shirt. It was decided that the front design would be a hiking shoe with cactuses, the back design would be: "Ramblers Hiking Club. In case of emergency, this shirt functions as…"

PAST HIKES:

1.) Wolfgang went to the Santa Ritas on Saturday, where he went up Gardner Canyon. On Sunday, he made another visit to the Arozona-Sonora Desert Museum.

2.) Rob and 3 others went to the Chiricahua Mountains, starting at Rustler Park. They set up camp along the ridge trail and went on several day hikes, such as Chiricahua Peak, Flys Peak, Centella point, and Barfoot Lookout.

3.) Lynsey went on a hike to Cave Creek near Phoenix.

4.) Robbie was in Peppersauce Cave in the Santa Catalinas and camped in the area. He saw several Cooper's Hawks.

FUTURE HIKES:

1.) Ross is leading a hike to Hutch's Pools on Saturday (4/29/2000) @ 8:30AM. Contact Ross @ 325-5912.

2.) There is a trip to the Mule Shoe Ranch (southeastern part of the Galiuro Mountains) being planned for the 1st weekend after finals (5/13&14/2000), which will involve some volunteer work and a hike to some hot springs. Contact Andy: andy.odell@nau.edu.

3.) There is an Arizona Trails Hike (5/20&21/2000) being planned. The plan is to do the Oracle Ridge Trail in the northern part of the Santa Catalinas. Since registrations need to be submitted, if anyone is interested, please contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu.

4.) Grand Canyon Trip: The specific reason I am contacting you is that I have a couple of slots available for a Grand Canyon excursion from May 15 - 20. I made plans for a party of four and then lost two of my hikers. I was wondering if it would be possible to fill the other slots through your club. We are leaving Tucson on the 15th, driving up to the South Rim, then catching the Trans-Canyon Shuttle to the North Rim where we have a cabin for the night. Then we have permits for two nights at Bright Angel CG and two nights at Indian Gardens. The night of the 20th, we have a single room (for four adults) at Thunderbird Lodge. The total cost for the shuttle tickets, hotel rooms and backcountry permits is about $200 per person. (I can give exact figures to anyone who is interested). The two people, who already going, are myself and my friend Jason Simmers. We're both pretty normal people - no ax murderers or anything - and we did the canyon from the South Rim last May. We loved it so much we just can't wait to go again! We just can't find anyone else adventurous enough to join us. Can you help? It is important to contact Wendy Lotze wlotze@uswest.net directly if interested in this trip.

MISCELLANEOUS OUTDOORS INFORMATION:

1.) There is a web site (free), providing topographic maps of the US: http://www.topozone.com. There is other topographic information, along with statistical information about routes to take also available. Contact Steve: sanewcomb@yahoo.com.

2.) Another good web site, providing a fun resource: http://www.soak.net.

INFORMATION: RAMBLING ON STATE LAND:

An Arizona State Land Recreational Use Permit is required for access onto or across State Trust Lands unless you're just passing through on a dedicated road. The cost is $15.00/individual/year, or $20.00/family/year. Permits are good for 365 days from the date of issue. The Arizona State Land Department maintains a small office here in Tucson; they are located at 233 N. Main Ave. (Olcott House), phone 628-5480. There are different categories of State Lands. The Arizona State Parks System operates independently of the State Trust Lands and has its own permitting system. There are four established passes for all Arizona State Parks with four persons being admitted on one pass. Passes are good for the calendar year only.

1) Unlimited Annual Pass ($65) - Good for unlimited number of entrances, including Kartchner Caverns.
2) Limited Annual Pass ($35) - Good for unlimited entrances except Kartchner Caverns and some of the parks along the Colorado River on weekends.
3) Five-Time Use Pass ($15) - Same conditions as Limited Annual Pass.
4) One-time use Pass (Cost varies with the park) - Purchasable at the gate.

The Federal Government also - through its various sub-entities - has various permits, passes, fees, etc., imposed for use of it properties. Indian Reservations also impose fees for most activities including hiking; rules & regulations vary from reservation to reservation. To my knowledge, there is no charge for use of County Lands for hiking. As far as privately owned property goes, it's up to the discretion of the owner to grant access or not. The Arizona Game & Fish Department, in cooperation with landowners, has erected signs where sportsmen are welcome to pass through private land. If it's POSTED, then keep out unless you have prior permission from the landowner to be there.

If anyone wants to post additional announcements for any hikes, etc., please feel free to use the listserve. Meanwhile, keep Rambling!
