Minutes for Meeting of 06-28-2000
Hello Ramblers!
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes
is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Future hiking club meetings, during the summer, will continue to be
held in the Forbes building lobby, in case Forbes, Room 307, isn't available.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The club president is leaving for the rest of the summer and asked members to think about a few items in her absence about preparing for the new school year. She noted that anyone can contact her by email while she is away hanna@u.arizona.edu
1.) Create wish list of items (equipment, maps, books, etc) the club can request for financial funding. Bring your thoughts to the meetings.
2.) Plan welcoming party to interest new students to be held in the first few weeks of the semester. Current idea is to set up a table for food and drinks on the mall, play volleyball and think up events to introduce new members. An Awards Ceremony was mentioned.
3.) Put together a "Ramblers Handbook" filled with information about hiking, such as equipment lists for different types of outings (day hike, short and long backpacks, swim packs, etc.) and useful first aid tips. The idea is to make it a booklet that someone would want to keep, rather than a handout or flyer. Contact Hanna with suggestions: hanna@u.arizona.edu
PAST HIKES:
1.) Michael hiked the Wilderness of the Rocks trail down to Mt. Lemon Trail and back on the Aspen Trail. The Wilderness is a nice trail, not too steep, with rock formations and pools. He saw horned lizards and a snake.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Fourth of July Flagstaff Fest (this name was hotly debated during the meeting). Michael announced the fire restrictions have been lifted for Coconino Forest, opening up more opportunities for things to do such as hike to San Francisco Peak. People planning on going should meet in the Park Student Union at 6:00 pm this Friday. We will pack the cars in the lot and leave any cars left behind at Ross's house (near Campbell and Elm). We will stop for dinner on the road, probably in Casa Grande. One vehicle will be returning on Monday (July 3) morning. Backpacks are not needed, as this is a car camping/Andy crashing outing only, but bring warm clothes for the evenings and rain gear. Contact Michael for more info: chamb@u.arizona.edu. Here's the tentative schedule:
Fri: Meet 6 pm PSU. Eat in Casa Grande. Sleep an Andy's.
Sat: Strawberry Crater, Wupatki Ruins, Lava Tubes (wear cold clothing)
Sun: San Fran Peak, BBQ and sleep at Andy's
Mon: Sedona, West Oak Creek, other places
Tue: Sedona, drive back to Tucson, maybe stop for fireworks in Phoenix
2.) Mitch will lead a hike along the Douglas Spring Trail in the Rincons
on Sunday, July 2nd. Length of hike depends on group and a secret waterfall
will be revealed. Meet at 8:00 am at the trailhead at the end of East Speedway Blvd
(not Park Student Union). If anyone has a car to drive people from PSU,
please announce it on the listserve and be sure to leave early enough
(30-40 min) to meet Mitch at 8 am. Bring water. Contact Mitch for more
info: 574-2996.
Ramble On!
