Minutes for Meeting of 08-02-2000
Hello Ramblers!
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes
is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Future hiking club meetings, during the summer, will continue to be
held in the Forbes building lobby, in case Forbes, Room 307, isn't available.
PAST HIKES:
1.) Michael was on a trip to Baja California, which was mostly a botanical
expedition at San Ignacio and the Viscaino Peninsula. There was much
driving; although, he did do some hiking.
2.) Wolfgang and Mead were in the Pinaleno Mountains on Sunday, where they
were hiking around the Riggs Lake area and the western part of the range.
They came to a meadow, where they were picking and eating wild raspberries.
In addition they saw excellent views of the other mountain ranges, looking
west, and the high part of the range. They also saw lots of bees,
butterflies, blue jays, grasshoppers, lizards, and wildflowers.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Wolfgang is leading a hike up Ramsey Canyon,
in the Huachuca Mountains,
on Sunday (8/6/2000). Departure is from the Park Student Center @ 6:30AM.
The hike will, basically, be through a shady, riparian area. It will be
important to bring at least 3 to 4 liters of water and a rain poncho (just
in case it rains, since it is summer monsoon season). There would be 2
options:
Option 1 (since someone inquired) would be to go up to Miller Peak. This
would be a longer 15 mile hike from and returning to the visitor center,
with about a 4000ft elevation gain. This would be rated "A".
Option 2 would be to go up the canyon and continue on the Arizona Trail,
toward the northern part of the range.
Contact Wolfgang at wolfgang@u.arizona.edu.
2.) Mead is looking for people interested in backpacking in the Grand
Canyon. He is planning the trip, with dates between December 15 and 20,
2000, and it would be a 3 to 4 day backpack. Contact Mead at
mjordan@egret.sao.arizona.edu.
