Minutes for Meeting of 08-09-2000
Hello Ramblers!
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes
is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Future hiking club meetings, during the summer, will continue to be
held in the Forbes building lobby, in case Forbes, Room 307, isn't available.
PAST HIKES:
1.) Robbie was in the Galiuro Mountains this weekend, in Copper Canyon,
where he did some hiking and camped in a riparian area. He saw lots of
wildlife.
2.) Wolfgang lead a trip to the Huachuca Mountains on Sunday, where they
were split into 2 groups. One group made it up to Miller Peak. The other
group went up to the Crest Trail. Wolfgang made it to Sawmill Springs,
which is 1/4 mile from another trailhead. They also saw lots of wildlife,
such as white tail deer, blue jays, woodpeckers, other birds, and lizards.
They also saw raspberries, blackberries, 4 species of orchids, and other
interesting plant species.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Mat is leading a canyoneering trip to Clear Creek this weekend. Details
are as follows:

> Greetings,
>
> Good news! there has been enough interest for a canyoneering trip this
>weekend
> (Aug 11 -13). OK, so there was Ramblers trip to West Clear Creek just a few
> months ago but this weekend we will be going somewhere different further
> upstream.
>
> My intention is to leave Friday night so that we have more time to play on
> Saturday. Please let me know if you are coming, when you can leave, and what
> sort of transport you could provide. (NB we will not necessarily meet in the
> Park Student Center car park this time.)
>
> The plan of attack will be to camp near the end of the road Friday night.
> Saturday morning we can backpack down to the creek level (steepest part of
> the trip) and strike camp again around this area. So there will no need to
> waterproof all your gear. From here we can explore downstream the rest of
> Saturday and then upstream Sunday.
>
> Upstream is open with a trail a lot of the way (I am using 'Canyoneering
> Arizona' here) with interesting side bits. Depending on time we could get
> as far as parts of Willow Valley.
>
> Downstream sounds more fun with plenty of wading and (unfortunately only
> one) swim. We can expect to find lots of slippery rocks while walking
> in the water.
>
> There is a much more interesting part of the canyon further downstream
> again which is done as a through trip requiring at least a couple of
> days. Maybe we will be back here for this in the future.
>
> Hear from you soon,
> Matt.
