Minutes for Meeting of 09-06-2000
Hello Ramblers!
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes
is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Future hiking club meetings, during the summer, will continue to be
held in the Forbes building lobby, in case Forbes, Room 307, isn't available.
ANNOUNCEMENTS CONCERNING ELECTION:
Since BJ, who is the Club's treasurer, has informed us that he is not able
to attend the meetings this semester, since he has classes at the same time
that the Ramblers hold their meetings. Nominations were held for
replacement for the position. The 3 candidates are as follows: Shanna
Vivison, Mike Moan, and Eric Shiers. Elections will be held at next week's
meeting.
ANNOUNCEMENTS CONCERNING COURSE:
There is a Desert Skills & Ecology Course being offered. For anyone, who is
interested, the information is as follows:

Hi,
My name is Tony Nester and I operate a Wilderness Skills School in
Flagstaff. I just wanted to drop a line to your hiking club about a 2-day
course on Desert Skills & Ecology, held in Phoenix on November 4-5. This
will be a hands-on course focusing on: Sonoran Desert Plant Uses, Water
Location Methods for Arid Environments, Primitive Firemaking Skills, Desert
Survival Skills, Mammal Track Identification, and Weaving with Yucca. The
cost is $150 and includes a hearty, Dutch-oven dinner, all course
materials, and Park camping fees. The cost for students is $125. McDowell
Mt. Park is where the course will be held. If you would like more

PAST HIKES:
1.) Michael lead a group, this past Labor Day weekend up to into Greenlee
County and the Blue Range (eastern Arizona, near New Mexico). They left
Friday evening and camped in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. On
Saturday, they drive up route 191 (old 666) to the Mogollon Rim and
Hannagan Meadow, where they hiked and camped in the area, returning on
Monday.
2.) Steve was on an over night backpacking trip up Pima Canyon, in the
Santa Catalina Mountains.
3.) 13 people went on Joe's trip up to 7 Falls up Bear Canyon, where lots
of water was flowing, and they also went swimming.
4.) Wolfgang did a trip up to northern New Mexico, where he hiked up the
east fork of the Red River, through forest, to Horseshoe Lake, and up to
the summit of Wheeler Peak (13,161ft). Returning, he also stopped at Lost
Lake, and then camped near the trailhead. He saw wild turkey, other birds,
marmots, and some wild flowers. He also visited some of the museums in
Taos, such as the Kit Carson Museum and Martinez Hacienda. Returning to
Tucson, he stopped at the Very Large Array for Radio-Astronomy and camped
in the Gila Wilderness.
5.) Erich was travelling for 3 months, in which he was at Rocky Mountain
National Park and the Grand Canyon in May. In June, he was in Norway, above
the Arctic Circle, went hiking in Germany, and skiing in Austria. In July
and August, he visited and hiked in Mt. Rainier National Park, Mt. St.
Helens, Jasper and Banff National Parks in Canada, Glacier National Park,
and Olympic National Park.
6.) Ross led a group of 3 people up to Josephine Saddle, via the Super
Trail, in the Santa Rita Mountains, this Labor Day Weekend.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Hanna is leading a hike to Lemmon Pools (Santa Catalina Mountains) day
hike: Leave this Saturday (9/9/2000) @ 10:30AM. Rated "C". If interested,
contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu.
2.) Robbie is interested in leading a trip up to the Vermillion
Cliffs/Pariah Wilderness in northern Arizona, during the Thanksgiving
weekend. Rated "A", since this is a "Kick-A** Hike". Contact Robbie:

3.) Michael is leading a trip to Pariah Wilderness/Buckskin Gulch Canyon in
northern Arizona, during the Veterans Day weekend. The basic plan is to
leave Friday (11/10/2000) and return Monday (11/13/2000). Contact Michael

4.) Hanna is leading a trip to the Pinacate National Park in Mexico and the
Castle Dome Mountains in Arizona, during Christmas time, for 6 days -
possibly more). If interested, contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu.
5.) Hanna is interested in leading a beginner's backpacking trip to the
Santa Rita Mountains, around October 14/15. Rated "C". If interested,
contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu.
6.) Another backpacking trip is also being planned for the Grand Canyon.
The dates are from Friday (12/15/2000) to Wednesday (12/20/2000). The
backpack will be down the Bright Angel Trail and to Indian Gardens and

7.) Michael is leading a trip to the Gila Box, north of Safford, later in
September. It still remains to be determined if it will be the weekend of
September 23/24 or September 30/October 1. Would be, either, a car camp or

8.) Hiroko is leading a hike on Sunday, with information as follows:

Hi all,
I would like to invite all of you to go hiking with us on Sunday(9/10)!! We
will go to Mount Lemmon Lookout. Have you ever been there? I heard it is
quite easy hike, but we can enjoy beautiful scenery there. So if you won't
go hiking on Saturday, or even if you will, here is another opportunity for
you!! Please bring some (a lot of?) water, lunch, snack, and your raincoat
(just in case of rain...)
We will meet at Park Student Union at 8:00am, so looking forward to seeing
you then!
Study hard and Work hard during weekdays, and let's enjoy our weekend!!
