ANNOUNCEMENT: SUMMIT HUT ANNOUNCES FREE SLIDE SHOWS IN OCTOBER

September 22, 2000

(Tucson, AZ) -- Summit Hut is pleased to sponsor two free slideshow presentations in October. Events are open to the public and are held on consecutive Thursdays, October 5th and 12th at 8:00PM. After each slideshow, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in fundraising raffles.

First, on October 5th at 8 p.m., Summit Hut helps kick off the first annual Sky Island Festival with a Sky Island Alliance slideshow featuring the sights and sounds of this great biological and cultural treasure. The Sky Islands region encompasses an area from Northern Mexico to the Mogollon area of Arizona and New Mexico, and is home to creatures ranging from jaguar to parrots on the mountains and plains that comprise our own backyard. After the show, there will be opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a $500 Summit Hut Shopping Spree (drawing to be held at the end of October). For details on the Sky Island Alliance (SIA), or the Festival, contact SIA at 520-624-7080 or www.skyislandalliance.org.

Next, on October 12th at 8 p.m., Summit Hut presents "La Futura" with Kurt Smith. This slideshow features the up-and-coming winter destination of El Potrero Chico, Mexico. Smith, a.k.a. the "General," will inform and entertain with his seven years' experience of mountain biking and rock climbing in this area north of Monterrey. "El Rey de las Montaņas" will also tell us of the history, culture, and people of Hidalgo. Be prepared for first-hand tales of climbs ranging from 15 pitches rated 5.13 to classic 5.9 sport routes. After the show, kick back with Kurt as he sponsors an Access Fund benefit raffle!

The Summit Hut is a locally-owned Tucson business that has been equipping backpackers, climbers, campers, hikers, adventure travelers and outdoor enthusiasts with quality gear and clothing for over 30 years.

FUTURE HIKES:

1.) Jon is leading a backpacking/camping trip into the scenic, interesting, and enchanting White Canyon. Contact Jon: jonh@u.arizona.edu. Details of that hike are as follows: ***** ***** *****

Since I will be out of town for the next week, I wanted to give a little advance information on my last trip.

I'm planning to go to the White Canyon Wilderness near Superior, about 2 hours away. The tentative plan is to go on Friday night (10/06) and to car-camp that night. Then I expect to do a low-stress backpack up the canyon to one of my favorite spots, where a spring may be used to supplement the water supply. There's a little bit of rock scrambling, but never anything that I'd call climbing (unless you want to). I expect to wander most of Saturday and Sunday on one of the ridges to take in the views, and to return early Sunday evening.

I will try to be at the Ramblers meeting on 10/04 to discuss this, but would like to hear from those interested. If anyone can drive, that's great. We should keep the group small and tight, because we'll be trying to avoid undue impact in some areas. Don't let that stop you from showing interest. I won't be replying to e-mails until next Wednesday or so, so don't be discouraged if you don't hear from me right away.

For those unfamiliar with the area, it is a beautiful desert canyon with steep walls up to about 800 feet high. The rock varies from white to tan to red, and there are sections with pinnacles and hoodoos. A few breaks in the walls allow exploration of the cliff tops, and the strata slope so that access becomes easier as one travels further up the canyon. There are also other formations and escarpments in the area besides the White Canyon proper, and we'll use our time to see something old and something new, perhaps.

Looking forward to finalizing plans next week, Jon

PS: I just wanted to add that the Friday night (10/06) departure is tentative. If a Saturday morning departure is better for those interested, it can be done. I just want plenty of time to play there, but it'll be more fun if we have several eager folks along.

Have fun,

Jon
