FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Jon is leading a backpacking/camping trip into the scenic, interesting,
and enchanting White Canyon Wilderness near Superior, about 2 hours away.
The plan is to depart on Friday night (10/06/2000) and to car-camp that
night. Then, expect to do a low-stress backpack up the canyon to a spot,
where a spring may be used to supplement the water supply. There's a little
bit of rock scrambling, but never anything that can be called climbing
(unless you want to). Expect to wander most of Saturday and Sunday on one
of the ridges to take in the views, and to return early Sunday evening. For
those unfamiliar with the area, it is a beautiful desert canyon with steep
walls up to about 800 feet high. The rock varies from white to tan to red,
and there are sections with pinnacles and hoodoos. A few breaks in the
walls allow exploration of the cliff tops, and the strata slope so that
access becomes easier as one travels further up the canyon. There are also
other formations and escarpments in the area besides the White Canyon
proper, and we'll use our time to see something old and something new,
perhaps. NOTE: The Friday night (10/06/2000) departure is more likely;
although, the exact departure time still remains to be determined. It is
important to contact Jon for exact departure arrangements and other
information: jonh@u.arizona.edu.
2.) Hanna is leading a hike to 7 Falls (a place with water) in the Santa
Catalinas, in Bear Canyon. Departure from the Park Student Center is on
Sunday (10/8/2000) @ 8:30AM (tentative). For additional information,
contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu. Bring lunch and swim wear. Also, the
group may go to dinner after the hike.
3.) Robbie is interested in leading a trip up to the Vermilion
Cliffs/Pariah Wilderness in northern Arizona, during the Thanksgiving
weekend. Rated "A", since this is a "Kick-A** Hike". There is a 10 person
limit and a $5.00 entrance fee. Contact Robbie: hannawacker@hotmail.com.
4.) Michael is leading a trip to Pariah Wilderness/Buckskin Gulch Canyon in
northern Arizona, during the Veterans Day weekend. The basic plan is to
leave Friday (11/10/2000) and return Monday (11/13/2000). Contact Michael
Dumke: mdumke@as.arizona.edu.
5.) Hanna is leading a beginner's backpacking trip to Kent Springs/Bog
Springs in the Santa Rita Mountains, during the October 14/15 weekend.
Rated "C". If interested, contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu.
6.) Hanna is leading a trip to the Pinacate National Park in Mexico and the
Castle Dome Mountains in Arizona, during Christmas time, for 6 days -
possibly more. If interested, contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu.
7.) Michael's trip to the Gila Box, north of Safford, is being postponed.
The dates still are to be decided, and it still remains to be determined if
it will be, either, a car camp or a backpack. For more information, contact
Michael Chamberland: chamb@u.arizona.edu. Rated "B+".
If anyone wants to post additional announcements for any hikes, etc.,
please feel free to use the listserve. Meanwhile, keep Rambling!
