Minutes for Meeting of 11-29-2000

Hello Ramblers!

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for all hikes is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.

2.) Future hiking club meetings, during the summer, will continue to be held in the Forbes building lobby, in case Forbes, Room 307, isn't available.

PAST HIKES:

1.) Wolfgang did a trip to California, where he did day hikes in the San Bernardino Mountains. The weather was great, and he encountered some wildlife, such as lots of ravens and lizards.

2.) 7 People and 1 dog went on Robbie's trip into the Paria Canyon. On the way there, they encountered snow in Flagstaff. Inside Paria Canyon, they camped inside and saw lots of interesting pinnacles, canyons, red rock, petroglyphs, cottonwood trees with yellow leaves, lots of animal footprints, and some predatory birds. They also encountered quicksand inside the canyon.

FUTURE HIKES:

1.) Joe Liesz is leading a hike up Agua Caliente Canyon, east of Tucson, on Sunday (12/3/2000) @ 8:30AM, with a return around 3:00PM. Rated "C". Please E-mail Joe: jleisz@ag.arizona.edu

2.) Hanna is arranging a trip to the Nature Conservancy's Mule Shoe Ranch to spend half of the time volunteering to do such things as removing brush, clean up, painting, and pulling exotic plants. With the free time, there would be some hiking and soaking in the natural hot springs. The plan is to depart on Saturday (12/2/2000) and return on Sunday (12/3/2000). The Nature Conservancy has dormitories to stay in. For more information and to RSVP, contact Hanna: hanna@u.arizona.edu

3.) Mead is leading a trip into the Grand canyon, in which some spaces became available. If interested in joining Mead's group into the Grand Canyon, please contact him at: mjordan@egret.sao.arizona.edu

4.) Hanna is leading a trip to the Pinacate National Park in Mexico, which would be after the finals week. Details are as follows:

Hi everyone:

I am just going to give you all a more detailed description of what this
trip will be like. The Pinacate region is to the south of Organ Pipe
National Monument, and is a volcanic desert with a cool dune system to the
west.

I am planning on leaving on the 17th, which is the Sunday following Finals
week -- this is a negotiable thing, however. Ideally we will get a
leisurely start, meeting at the parking lot around 8 am & leaving by 10 (I
am assuming we may have a few errands to run, such as last minute
groceries). We will drive down to Mexico by way of Lukeville, where we will
take care of the insurance. Insurance for 4 days will be about $40 per
vehicle, and we will split it the same way we split gasoline costs.

We would combine car camping with a short backpack into a base camp. There
is no water availability, so we will be lugging it with us. This is a
beautiful place, so anyone who hasn't been to Mexico yet should consider
this for an introduction.

I have been contacted by 4 people who wish to go, but so far no one has
volunteered a vehicle. A 4-wheel drive high clearance car is the best, but
there is at least one road that would be acceptable for a passenger car or
truck. If you are interested in going, please let me know if you have a
vehicle available & wish to drive.

Once I have a confirmed vehicle, I will update anyone who RSVPs. Below is
the link to a map.
