FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Michael is planning a trip to the Joshua Tree National Park, during the
Martin Luther King weekend, from January 12 - 15, 2001, with updated
information, as follows:
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Someone has asked me some questions about the Joshua Tree trip. I'll answer
them here in case anyone else is wondering, and to review, since it has
been a while since the original post.
When's it happening?
We're doing a trip to Joshua Tree National Park in California
http://www.nps.gov/jotr/ This is over the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Holiday. Plan is to leave the evening of Friday Jan 12, and return the
night of Monday Jan 15 (the Holiday).
Departure time and place: behind (west side of) the Park Student Union at
6pm on Friday Jan 12.
How much space is left?
The vehicles we've got are pretty much filled up now, and some of our
transportation is a little shaky, that's why I've posted a "plea" to ask if
others who are going might have a car they can bring, in the event some of
our drivers don't show. If you have a car you can bring, that certainly
opens up more space.
This should be on good roads, definitely not 4wheel or high clearance
territory.
What will be the total cost?
I can't tell you that. We split the cost of gas, park fees, and other
shared costs. Past trips of this duration have shown gas is the biggest
single cost and may be around $20/person, depending on number of
people/vehicle and gas efficiency. You do not necessarily need the money on
hand during the trip as we usually pay up at the next Rambler meeting. But
at least bring enough money in case you are hungry and want to buy a Moon
Pie at the gas station. I hope to get us into the free campground at Jumbo
Rocks (no reservation system). If it's full we may have to go elsewhere and
might need to pay.
What about food and gear?
Like all Ramblers trips, you must provide your own food, water, and gear.
If you have a camp stove, please consider bringing it. If you don't, and
would like to cook food, bring such food and utensils but also be prepared
in case nobody winds up bringing a stove. We will be spending our time in a
National Park, and water should be available. Bring several liters so you
won't have to keep running to the tap. Have a container to carry on the
trail.
We'll be doing day hikes and car camping. Don't bring a big backpack. Bring
a small pack (bookbag) or just a water bottle and snack you can carry. We
won't be away from the car all day. Expect the weather to be similar to
Tucson, so you can sleep in tent or sleep out if you like, but you'll need
a sleeping bag to be comfortable. Be prepared to be out in the sun all day;
respect your epidermal tolerance. Our gear space is a bit limited so pack
light. If you don't have all the gear you need, some is available from the
Ramblers "box" or for rent at the Rec. Center, or you can post to this list
to ask if anyone can share a tent, etc.
It's a joint effort, and all that Three Musketeers stuff. See you at 6PM!
Michael

11.) Stephen Newcomb is planning a trip to Paria Canyon in May. Information
is as follows:
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Ramblers,
I'd like to lead a Paria Canyon backpack trip just after the semester ends
in May. Plan to do what Michael wanted to do, hike from Wire Pass to
Whitehouse, and spend 3 nights in the canyon. The Paria reservation
calendar is starting to
fill up, and the actual dates (leaving in the evening of the first day)
are, as follows:
Thursday, May 17 - Mon, May 21 (20 spots)
If you want to go on this trip and think you can fit it into your schedule,
please email me ASAP. Paria Canyon is a relatively small canyon north of
the Grand Canyon and Paria River empties into the Colorado at Lee's Ferry.
Buckskin Gulch is a premier slot canyon in the US that empties into Paria
Canyon. There are no technical climbs or repels, but the 3 night/ 4 day
trip covers 21 miles between Wire Pass and Whitehouse, all basically
walking along the canyon floor. There are areas where pools of water
collect, but May should be a dry time of year up there. One spot requires
climbing up (or down depending on the direction of travel) through a small
opening in a wall of boulders. There is very little elevation gain or loss
during the hike. You can read more about it here:
