Minutes for Meeting of 03-21-2001
Hello Ramblers!
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for departures
for all hikes is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Future hiking club meetings, for the rest of the spring semester, will
continue to be held in the Forbes building, Room 307.
3.) For information about the club, hikes, and meeting places, check out
our website: http://www.biocom.arizona.edu/ramblers/
4.) Additional hiking information is available on Andy Flach's trail guide,
which is located on the Sierra Club website:
http://www.sierraclub.org/chapters/az/trail_guide/
PAST HIKES:
1.) Hanna and Rob went to the Superstition Mountains during the Spring
Break. They were in Labarge Canyon and on the Lost Dutchman Trail. There
were some swimming areas, and they also saw lots of wildflowers and few
people.
2.) 4 people went on Liz's Grand Canyon backpacking trip. There was some
ice on the South Kaibab Trail. They stood at the Bright Angel campground,
where they saw deer. They also went to Indian Gardens and out via the
Bright Angel Trail.
3.) Robbie went on an interesting Sonoran Desert hike, in which he saw lots
of wildflowers, potsherds, petroglyphs, and also a desert tortoise.
4.) Eric Shiers was on a field trip, doing research in the 4 corners area
of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. This also included hiking in
Mesa Verde National Park, where he explored the interesting Indian ruins.
5.) Ross was on a hike in the Rincon Mountains, starting at the Douglas
Spring trailhead.
6.) Loretta, Wolfgang, and Steve Newcomb went to the Renaissance Fair on
Sunday. Some of the highlights of the trip were the presentations and
demonstrations of the art and science of the glass blowing.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Rob Klotz is leading a backpacking trip into the Eagletail Mountains
this weekend, with details presented as follows:
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
I, Rob Klotz (Nature Club) will be leading a two day backpack into the
Eagletail Mountains (west of Phoenix) to track and photograph Desert
Bighorn Sheep. This trip will take place March 23-25 (the weekend after
Spring Break). Current plan:
Fri. - 6PM departure, Park Student Union. Car camp at Courthouse Rock. (3
hr. drive)
Sat. - Hike to Dead Deer Tank and Triple Eye Catchment. Camp on Eagle
Ridge. (approx. 6-7 miles)
Sun. - Hike to Indian Spring to view one of the largest concentrations of
prehistoric rock art in Arizona. Return to vehicles approx. 5 PM. Return to
campus around 8 PM.
Hazards: I'll rate this trip a "B-", however water (1 gallon per person per
day, for safety) must be carried. We can cache some water at a half-way
point near Indian Spring and pick it up on Sunday. Most hiking will be
cross country in sandy washes and along ridges with loose, crumbly rock and
the ever present Mr. Cholla. This ain't no walk in the park! Still, the
area is visually spectacular and the odds of seeing wildlife are good.

4.) Loretta is planning an over night trip to observe the Lyrid meteor
shower on April 21/22, 2001. The Lyrid meteor shower is one of those
reliable showers of the year and is timed for this year at a time close to
new moon, allowing for good views. The radiant lies in the constellation
Lyra, which is well-placed for the northern hemisphere after 10:30 PM local
time. Although the exact location of the trip is still being decided, it
will be in one of the mountain ranges in southern Arizona and away from
city lights. If interested, contact Loretta at .
5.) Loretta is also planning a trip to Bryce Canyon National Park, which is
in southwestern Utah, during the Memorial Day weekend in May. This is a
very scenic, enchanting, and beautiful region, with many interesting
geological features and canyons. If interested, contact Loretta at
llp2877@yahoo.com
6.) Steve Newcomb's trip to Paria Canyon in May is full, but send him your
name to get on a waiting list if interested (see Jan 24th minutes for
details). Trips planned this far in advance often have several
cancellations. sanewcomb@yahoo.com

now until April 1, 2001. There is free admission with the UA Cat Card for
UA students, faculty, and staff and accompanying guests. There are also

2 hours north, taking Hwy 79, past Florence, to Florence Junction, where a
right turn brings one on Hwy 60, continuing to the arboretum. Note: This is
very close to the Superstition Mountains. For more information:
