PAST HIKES:

lots of wildflowers, up to about 20 different species of flowering plants,
could be seen.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) There is a last minute call for Steve Newcomb's trip to the Blue Range
Wilderness this weekend, leaving this evening. It is important to RSVP
Steve at [sanewcomb@yahoo.com]. Information is presented as follows:

Ramblers,
I will be leading the trip to the Blue Range Wilderness next weekend
(Thursday evening to Sunday evening). Below is the description that was
posted a few weeks ago, with a few updates (like weather).
Members must RSVP me to go on this trip. Let me know if you have a vehicle
that has good clearance. I will have one, but we may need another.
Steve
I will lead a 3 day backpack trip into the Blue Range Wilderness Area
(central eastern AZ) leaving 6 PM this Thursday from the PSU. Will car camp
Thursday evening along the way, probably in the Safford area or north of
Morenci. On Friday we will hike along the Blue River to Hannah Hot Springs
area (and no, our President doesn't own this). ;-) Saturday will be open to
explore the area or just relax. We will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day
(update: this depends on if there is any Irish spirit left in us!) in the
evening with a group meal of Irish cuisine, Irish songs and music. Plan to
leave the area by 10 AM on Sunday and return to Tucson late. This is a
backpack into a wilderness area. You must carry everything you need, except
for some items that are shared. The weather forecast for the nearest area
is: TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...PARTLY CLOUDY... LOWS IN THE MID 30S TO
LOWER 40S. HIGHS IN THE 70S. It will probably be 5 to 10 degrees cooler in
the Blue Range. It will be a "B" backpack, 6 to 7 miles one way, fairly
flat but there is no trail. Much of the hiking consists of walking along
the river bank over rocks of different sizes. There are many crossings
(most shin deep, some to the lower thigh) and the water is cold. There are
many ways to overcome the crossings, from simply wearing an old pair of
sneakers, or a sport sandal (Teva or similar) with socks (fast drying
synthetics work the best), neoprene (the stuff diving suits are made of)
booties to hiking boots with gaiters or even knee-high water-proof
insulated boots. I've seen all of these. If your feet are cold sensitive, I
recommend taking action to keep them happy. (Update: if you want to do
serious canyoneering, consider bringing a wetsuit, upper body type. There
are several narrows that are fun to go through, but require swimming
through rather cold water). Map of the area:

2.) Todd Grayson is in the process of making arrangements for a backpacking
trip into the scenic Aravaipa Canyon for some time during April. It would
be an overnight backpacking trip, and dates still are being determined. If
interested, contact Todd: [bobsandstone@yahoo.com].
3.) Todd Grayson is in the process of making arrangements for a backpacking
trip into the Cibeque Canyon for some time during April. This canyon is on
the Apache Indian Reservation, along the Gila River, and permits from the
reservation will be obtained. It would be an overnight backpacking trip,
and dates still are being determined. If interested, contact Todd:
[bobsandstone@yahoo.com].
4.) Torsten is planning an overnight backpacking trip into White Canyon for
the weekend of April 7/8, 2001. It is rated "B". If interested, contact
Torsten at [tclay@physics.arizona.edu].
5.) Loretta is planning an overnight car camping trip to observe the Lyrid
meteor shower on April 21/22, 2001. The Lyrid meteor shower is one of those
reliable showers of the year and is timed for this year at a time close to
new moon, allowing for good views. The radiant lies in the constellation
Lyra, which is well-placed for the northern hemisphere after 10:30 PM local
time. Although the exact location of the trip is still being decided, it
will be in one of the mountain ranges in southern Arizona and away from
city lights. If interested, contact Loretta at [llp2877@yahoo.com].
6.) Loretta is also planning a trip to Bryce Canyon National Park, which is
in southwestern Utah, during the Memorial Day weekend in May. This is a
very scenic, enchanting, and beautiful region, with many interesting
geological features and canyons. If interested, contact Loretta at
[llp2877@yahoo.com].
7.) Joe is planning a trip in southern Utah and northern Arizona from about
May 16, 2001, through the Memorial Day Weekend. Details still remain to be
worked out; however, if interested in joining him on the trip or any part
of it, feel free to contact him at [jleisz@ag.arizona.edu].
8.) Steve Newcomb's trip to Paria Canyon in May is full, but send him your
name to get on a waiting list if interested (see Jan 24th minutes for
details). Trips planned this far in advance often have several
cancellations. Contact: [sanewcomb@yahoo.com].
9.) Loretta is also planning a Paria Canyon trip around the same time as
Steve' Newcomb's trip. (In fact the plan is to even, possibly, rendezvous
with Steve's group.) If interested, contact Loretta at [llp2877@yahoo.com].
OTHER EVENTS:
1.) The Boyce Thompson Arboretum is hosting a spring plant sale, which is
from now until April 1, 2001. There is free admission with the UA Cat Card
for UA students, faculty, and staff and accompanying guests. There are also
discounts available with the Cat Card on plants, etc. The location is about
2 hours north, taking Hwy 79, past Florence, to Florence Junction, where a
right turn brings one on Hwy 60, continuing to the arboretum. Note: This is
very close to the Superstition Mountains. For more information:
(520)-689-2811, or [http://arboretum.ag.arizona.edu].
2.) Fun and Games Show at Loretta's place: 1603 N, Highland. Time: Tuesday,
April 3, 2001 @ 7:00 PM. Contact Loretta: 977-3442.
3.) Slide Contest: There will be a slide contest some time toward the end
of the spring semester. You may already start planning on which slides you
want to submit to the contest. Please submit slides to Hanna. The limit is
5 slides per person.
4.) Club Elections: Since the end of the spring semester is rapidly
approaching, nominations can be submitted for the election of the Ramblers
Hiking Club officers for next semester. The positions are for: President,
Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Webmaster. Please submit
nominations to Hanna: [hanna@u.arizona.edu] or Wolfgang:
[wolfgang@u.arizona.edu], or at the next meetings.
ANNOUNCEMENT: BACKPACK FOR SALE
Hanna has a backpack for sale. If interested and for more information,
contact Hanna: [hanna@email.arizona.edu].

ANNOUNCEMENT: SUMMIT HUT ANNOUNCES FREE SLIDE SHOW
Please join the Summit Hut, 5045 E. Speedway Boulevard, Tucson, on Friday,
April 6, for a very special event and free slide show benefiting the Sky
Island Alliance. The Summit Hut hosts legendary adventurer Royal Robbins
as he signs books and posters and presents a slideshow of "40 Years of
Adventure." The book signing and complementary hors d'oeuvres will start
at 7 PM, and the slide show will start at 8 PM.
Royal's lifetime of adventure has included remarkable feats such as the
first ascent of the Salathe Wall on El Capitan and skiing, climbing,
kayaking, and hiking adventures about which most people can only dream.
But he couldn't find the right clothing in which to explore, so in 1975 he
and his wife, Liz, started to make their own clothing, which has evolved
into a complete line of adventure and travel clothing. Come hear stories,
see awesome photos, and meet a living American legend at the Summit Hut.
The Summit Hut is a locally-owned Tucson business that has been equipping
backpackers, climbers, campers, hikers, adventure travelers and outdoor
enthusiasts with quality gear and clothing for over 30 years.
For additional information, or to pre-register call Terri Gay or Sharon
