day. He saw ravens, hawks, cardinals, other birds, and lots of lady bird
beetles.

5.) Robbie is planning a trip to Utah, with information as follows:
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Hello Ramblers,

I just got out of this week's meeting, and an idea came to mind. I'm
planning a trip up to Northern Utah to see family, sometime soon after
finals (May 12th)for about a week's length.

I wanted to explore a bit in southern Utah to check out some old familiar
places (Bryce Canyon, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, San Rafael Swell,
and other place with no names). Then drive up to Brigham City and spend a
few days there to see the family.

If anyone would like to come along for this trip your company and help with
fuel would be delightful. Even better would be a reliable automobile if
you got one. My old rambler wagon is not as reliable I must admit, but
I still love it.

For the days I'll be with family, I know many great places to visit while in
the Northern Utah area, such as Logan Canyon, Bear Lake, Willard Peak, and
other natural areas. I might be partial, but this area is very beautiful.
You'll see why Brigham Young said "this is the place", and it wasn't because
he was fanatical leader of the Mormons, he had genuine eye for beauty me
thinks.

Give me a telephone call (792-0970) so we can talk it out. With or without
autos, as long as there is one with enough room. Otherwise, I'll cruse up
in the rambler, and trust in "Triple A Plus" auto plan.

Utah's theme: "Its a pretty great state", probably referring to the great
salt lake. It is also known as the "beehive state", and having "the greatest
snow on earth". Ok, now I'm just rambling. Thanks for hearing me out.

Robbie Hannawacker
still VP of Ramblers hiking club of UA
(520) 792-0970

6.) Joe is planning a trip in southern Utah and northern Arizona from about
May 16, 2001, through the Memorial Day Weekend. Details still remain to be
worked out; however, if interested in joining him on the trip or any part
of it, feel free to contact him at [jleisz@ag.arizona.edu].

7.) Steve Newcomb's trip to Paria Canyon in May is full, but send him your
name to get on a waiting list if interested (see Jan 24th minutes for
details), just in case there still are any cancellations. Contact:
[sanewcomb@yahoo.com].

8.) Ross is making arrangements for a 4-day backpacking trip in the Rincon
Mountains, east of Tucson, for some time early June (dates to be
determined). This trip will be on the Turkey Creek Trail, Spud Rock, and
other areas. The 1st day is rated "A+", and the other days are rated "B".
If interested, contact Ross: [rosslampert@hotmail.com].

ELECTIONS:

An election was held, and it was decided to postpone the elections of
officers to the beginning of the Fall 2001 semester. This will allow an
opportunity to have more nominations presented for the election, when there
would be a larger pool of people from which candidates could be selected
for official positions.

Voting began on accepting updates to the Ramblers Constitution and the Club
Policy Document. In the case of these 2 club documents, members, who can't
make the meeting, can still cast their vote (accept or reject) by sending
an E-mail to Hanna [hanna@u.arizona.edu]. Arrangements will need to be made
to have people read the documents, if voting via E-mail. The deadline for
sending votes via E-mail is Friday (5/4/2001). Results will be presented in
future announcements

OTHER EVENTS:

1.) Slide Contest: The slide show contest will be held next Wednesday
(5/9/2001) at Hanna's house. The plan is to order Pizza, which is to be
delivered at the meeting, and then to "hike" to Hanna's house, after the
meeting. You may continue to submit slides, which you want to present in
the contest. Please submit slides to Hanna. The limit is 5 slides per
person.

2.) Rogaining Trip: Matt Chamberlain is arranging a rogaining trip, with
information, as follows:
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Greetings,

Anyone who is interested in hiking and following a map should consider
entering a rogaine.

What is rogaining??
No, it's not related to hair growth! Rogaining is a cross-country
navigation sport; a little like orienteering. Teams of 2 to 5 go out on a
course and navigate their way to collect controls for points, using only a
compass and pre-marked maps. The team that collects the most points in the
time allowed (say 8 or 24 hours) wins. For more info:
[http://rogaine.asn.au/ara/index.html]. I am mentioning this now because
there is a rogaine being organized in Arizona for the weekend of May 5/6.
The event will be in the Mogollon Rim region with 8 and 24 hour categories.
It is $35 to enter if you do so before April 14, or $50 after. Seriously,
these rogaines are the best way to improve your map reading and navigation
skills; regardless of if you are a seasoned eco-warrior or if you are still
working out which end of the compass points north. For those with
experience, you can be challenged by trying to navigate through the night,
especially when it is 3:00 in the morning. However, the less masochistic
can enjoy the walk through the countryside and savor some of the hot
food/drinks available at base camp. Interested? I am happy to help
coordinate if there are Ramblers who want to go but need to find someone to
form a team or a lift to the event. I would also be happy to give a 'map
skills night' to go over some of the basics, e.g. compass bearings, reading
contours and route picking. For more details on the event itself, the
website is: [http://grad.math.arizona.edu/~dcoombs/rog/2001.html], and you
can e-mail me if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Matt.

3.) Conference: Wolf Reintroduction
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***
To those of you who support wolf reintroduction in east-central Arizona,
there is a VERY important chance to have your voice heard (and possibly
keep the Feds from pulling out of the program!). If the Feds pull out, it
could act as a "green light" for poachers to go after the wolves currently
in the wild. Right now, poaching is at a minimum due to the enforcement
efforts of the AZ G&F and the USFWS through patrols and telemetry...if they
pull out, the opponents to reintroduction may have the opportunity to kill
off these animals. If you cannot attend, you may want to fire off a letter
to the address located at the end of this message.

Following is an alert from Sandy Bahr of the Sierra Club:
----------------------------------
WOLF ALERT!

Please attend this critical Arizona Game & Fish Commission meeting on
Saturday May 12, 2001 at 1:30 PM, at the Manor House Conference Center
located at 415 E. Hwy 70 in Safford Arizona. The Sierra Club will be
helping to arrange carpools, so please call Sandy Bahr at (602) 253-8633 or
email me at grandcanyon@qwest.net and I will make sure you are included in
the carpooling arrangements. We are looking at carpools from both Phoenix
and Tucson at a minimum. It is critical that you attend this meeting and
show your support for the Mexican Gray Wolf recovery program and also for
the participation of the Game and Fish Department in this program. It is
quite possible that the Commission will vote to withdraw its participation
in the program. The chair of the Game and Fish Commission, Dennis Manning,
is very strongly opposed to the wolf program and has a new ally in southern
Arizona rancher Commissioner Sue Chilton.

Please tell the Commissioners that:
* Good sound science supports wolf recovery and so does the public. Wolves
have demonstrated they can hunt and kill prey, bear and rear their young,
and do all of the things expected of wild born wolves.
* Wolves played an important role in our southwestern ecosystems in the
past and will help restore natural balance and diversity to our native
wildlife in the future.
* Arizonans support the return of the Mexican gray wolf to the wilds of
Arizona.
* In the three years the wolves have been in the wild, and especially
recently, there have been minimal impacts to nearby communities. The staff
of both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arizona Game and Fish
Department have gone out of their way to accommodate the small, but vocal
minority that oppose wolves.
* The Arizona Game and Fish Commission has a trust responsibility for all
of Arizona's wildlife and should not leave this program to the federal
government alone. Arizona can and should be a leader in the
re-establishment of native wildlife species.
* Wolf recovery will continue through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
because it is required by the Endangered Species Act and supported by most
Arizonans. If Arizona Game and Fish is not involved then Arizona loses the
voice of its own wildlife professionals in this program.
* Nothing in the first three years of this program warrants the Department
withdrawing its support.

If you cannot make it to this meeting, please write and send a letter to:

Dennis Manning, Chair
Arizona Game & Fish Commission
2221 W. Greenway Rd.
Phoenix, AZ 85023-4399
fax (602) 789-3299, email to [mketterer@gf.state.az].

Thank you for your support of Arizona's wolves!
