Minutes for Meeting of 05-30-2001
Hello Ramblers,
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1.) Important: Unless otherwise announced, the meeting place for departures
for all hikes is behind the Park Student Center, in the parking lot.
2.) Future hiking club meetings will continue to be held in the Forbes
building, Room 307, for the summer.

PAST HIKES:
1.) Loretta, Massimo, Rob, and Steve went on a backpacking trip up the
middle fork of the Gila River to some hot springs in the Gila Wilderness.
They saw rattlesnakes, a bear, trout, other wildlife, and lots of deciduous
trees.
2.) Wolfgang was on an overnight backpacking trip to the Lemmon Pools in
the Santa Catalinas.
3.) Jennifer hiked on the Butterfly Trail in the Santa Catalinas on Monday.
4.) Heather was on a trip to the eastern part of the Sierras, where she was
camping and day hiking.
FUTURE HIKES:
1.) Rob is planning a trip to the Chiricahua National Monument, leaving
Friday evening (6/1/2001), and returning on Sunday (6/3/2001). It will be a
car camping trip with day hikes. Rated "B". There is an entrance fee of

2.) Steve is planning a moonlight hike on Tuesday evening (6/5/2001) to
Blackett's Ridge, starting in Sabino Canyon. Departure is @ 7:00 PM from
PSU. Rated "B-/C+". For more information, contact Steve at:

3.) Ross is making arrangements for a 4-day backpacking trip in the Rincon
Mountains, east of Tucson. There are 5 spaces available. Additional
information is presented:

I actually would like to make the departure time for the Rincon trip 6:00
PM on Wednesday, June 6. We will still meet at the PSU. Please RSVP, if
interested. I need your full name, address, phone number, and color, year,
make & model of your vehicle, as well as license plate number for the
purposes of getting a back country permit. The only group cost will be gas.
There is no fee for the permit, but it will reserve us a campground.

The return is on Sunday (6/10/2001). This trip involves backpacking up the
Turkey Creek Trail to the Spud Rock campground, setting up base camp, and
doing day hikes from that campground. The 1st day is rated "A+", and the

ANNOUNCEMENT: CLUB EQUIPMENT:
It is important to return all borrowed Ramblers Hiking Club equipment to
Ross ASAP: [rosslampert@hotmail.com] or 325-5912. In addition, Ross will be
out of town from June 20, 2001 to July 18, 2001. If club equipment needs to
be borrowed, then prior arrangements will need to be made.
ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING SUMMIT HUT'S FREE EVENTS
Please join the Summit Hut, 5045 E. Speedway Boulevard, Tucson, for the
following FREE events:
Saturday, June 2, from 10 AM to 6 PM: Summit Hut is pleased to celebrate
National Trails Day. In accord with the statewide theme, "Community Trails:
Pathways to Health" Trail Fest 2001 will offer suggestions on how to make
outdoors activities part of a healthy lifestyle, plus ideas on staying
healthy on the trail. There will be healthy snacks courtesy of Bashas, and
representatives from the hiking departments of Miraval-Life in Balance and
Canyon Ranch will be available to discuss their unique ways of
incorporating trails activities into a lifetime of wellness.
Saturday, June 9, at 10:30 AM: Summit Hut continues its series of in-store
educational courses with another Gearing Up For...Getting to Know Your
Garmin GPS class. This hands-on seminar will introduce participants to some
basics of navigation and GPS use. Attendance is limited, so
pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Please call Sharon Scott at
325-1554 to pre-register or for more information.

backpackers, climbers, campers, hikers, adventure travelers and outdoor

ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING RAMBLERS T-SHIRTS
Ramblers T-shirts are still available! The shirts look great! They are made
with Hanes preshrunk cotton. They are natural (a light tan) with dark brown
print. The design on the back is an accurate drawing of a hiker's boots
with cholla cactus segments stuck to it. On the front upper left, it has
printed: RAMBLERS HIKING CLUB, with a list of seven important uses for the
shirt in case of an emergency. There are 3 sizes available: mediums, large,
and extra large. They are only $7 a shirt. Place your order to reserve you
