Minutes for Meeting of 06-20-2001

MINUTES OF JUNE 20th, 2001

Past Hikes:

Rob Baker led a trip to the local bowling alley on Tuesday. 7 Ramblers
bowled until 1:00 AM. Nearby macho men were throwing their balls into the
air to let them crash onto the ails. The management did nothing.

On Friday, Ross a some buds went to a meadow near Mount Bigilow. They saw
stars, a big bright mars, and they drank beer. (not an official club outing)

Steve and Loretta went orienteering in the Santa Catalina Mountains on
Sunday.
This event was near the Palisades Trailhead. By using a map and a compass,
their task was to find flags. They had fun.

On Saturday, Loretta and Steve went contra-dancing to music of the 80's
and 90's.

Andrew went rock climbing at "Rocks and Ropes" on Saturday. He helped
children
climb, and got a week of free climbing as barter.

Torstin made observations of things in the sky above the Empire Ranch last
Saturday. He saw some mosquitoes as well.

Robbie and Rob Klotz went to California Gulch (near Sycamore Cyn.)a few
weeks ago to monitor cattle impacts for the Center for Biological
Diversity.
The area was overgrazed except for a small exclosure built to protect the
Sonoran Chub. Most of the bolting agaves had been lopped down by cattle,
which
may negatively impact to the endangered lesser longnose bats known to roost
in the area.

Robbie, Bob Porter, and friends did a naturalist hike in the Santa Catalina
Mountains on Wednesday of two weeks past. We had plant and butterfly
experts
along.

Michael Chamberland and Robbie did some hiking in the Santa Catalinas last
week. We observed many plants and insects.

Monsoon moisture is here! At the end of this week's meeting rain started
pouring, and strong winds scattered objects all over campus including the
ramblers who made their way to Zachary's and elsewhere.

Splendid ventures to you all!
