Minutes for Meeting of 07-11-2001

Hello Ramblers,

Seven people showed up for the meeting.

FUTURE HIKES:

1) Steve Newcomb will lead a pleasant morning hike on the David Yetman Trail in
the Tucson Mountains, this Saturday, July 14. Meet at the PSU parking lot at
6am to take advantage of the cool air and start the weekend off on the right
foot. Rated "C" (3 to 8 miles, less than 1500 ft elevation change). Bring 1
liter of water and a snack if you like. Contact: [sanewcomb@yahoo.com]

2) Andrew is planning a car camping trip to the Chiricahua National Monument
leaving Friday evening, July 20 and returning Sunday afternoon around 3pm. A
long hike is planned on Saturday, probably a loop through Echo Canyon and Heart
of the Rocks, and a short one on Sunday. Stay tuned for more information on the
listserv.

3) Steve Newcomb and Rob Baker are leading a trip to Wheeler Peak, New Mexico
on Aug 3 until Aug 6, 2001. However, if another vehicle(s) comes then the stay
can be lengthen for some. This Hike is tentatively rated an "A" since Wheeler
Peak is over 13000 ft. RSVP Steve, [sanewcomb@yahoo.com]. More information will
be posted to the listserv.

PAST HIKES:

1) Dan, Heather, Rob Baker, Angela, Ricardo and Andrew hiked Picacho Peak on
Sunday, July 1. They left Tucson at 5am (wow, I'm impressed) and took the
shortest, steepest trail to the top where Rob whipped out his stove and cooked
up a pile of pancakes! Rumor has it no one at the top of Picacho Peak that
morning went down hungry.

2) Massimo and Patrick volunteered at the Buenes Aires preserve last weekend.
They planted native grasses (which Massimo pointed out weren't technically
native since they were planting them). On Sunday they went on a short hike and
saw an owl.

3) Nine Ramblers rambled down to Lemmon Pools in the Catalina Mts. on July 4th.
Leaving at 6am and arriving at the top of Mt. Lemmon at 7:30 turned out to be
pretty cool, temperature wise. (Funny how that elevation thing works ;-) They
hiked the Marshall Gulch trial to the Wilderness of Rocks down to Lemmon
Canyon. The stopped by the rock previously known as "Elephant Rock" (named so
on a Fall Rambler's trip), ate breakfast and dubbed it "Breakfast Rock". There
was talk that Hanna would lead a group of boy scouts to the area, so when
rustling was heard above the pools it was a great surprise to see almost 40
Southern Arizona Hiking Club members pour out of the woods! Some Ramblers
returned to the Wilderness of Rocks trail by going up Lemmon Canyon from the
pool, aided by webbing to get by a few tricky spots.

Ramble On,
