Minutes for Meeting of 08-01-2001

Hello Ramblers,

Rob Baker presented a few beautiful slides of the Teton and Havasu Canyon
trips. More are expected to come once Michael gets his photos developed.

Hanna wants to compose a Ramblers cookbook by the end of the year, and she
is asking members to contribute their recipes. Assumedly an outdoor
foodstuffs theme would be desired. Contact Hanna with your recipes at:
hanna@u.arizona.edu

Farewell to Nicole and Happy Birthday to Ricardo! Nicole will be off to
Europe for good, and will be missed. Ricardo is 26.? After today's meeting
Ramblers met at Zachary's to celebrate these events. Yum.

Past Hikes:

Rob Baker led a hike in the Grand Tetons National Park last week. After
exploring the Park, members of the Teton group had joined up with Jennifer's
Havasu Canyon trip in the Grand Canyon area. According to photographs,
Stephen Newcomb slept much of the time (hopefully having good dreams).
Havasu Canyon was hot, but there were beautiful blue pools with water falls
in the company of fluted mineral deposits on steep cliffs.

Robb Hannawacker and Michael Chamberland were of two Ramblers who joined the
Sky Island Alliance to inventory roadways in the Blue Range Primitive area .
It was rainy much of the time. We saw a lot of wildlife such as turkey,
blue grouse, elk, mule deer, mountain tree frogs, and garter snakes.
Several species of fungi, and flowers had proliferated as well.

Future Hikes:

Saturday, August 4, 2001. Jennifer will be leading a day hike in the Santa
Rita Mountains. Trails are negotiable, and grade is unknown. The group
will meet at the west parking area of the Park Student Union (PSU)at 6:00
AM. Jenifer expects to be back by 3:00 PM. If you would like to join on
this hike, contact Jenifer at: jenjenabc@juno.com

Sunday, August 5, 2001. Joe will be leading a hike in the Mount Lemmon
area. Exact trails are still to be decided. Therefore rating is unknown.
The group will be meeting at the PSU at 9:00 AM. Contact Joe at:
jleisz@ag.arizona.edu

Remember to bring more water than you need on hikes (4-6 liters for summer
day hikes), and chill out when you feel over-heated. The likelihood of
getting injured by lightening is higher than one would expect, especially
for the few who actually hike when it occurs. Avoid open summits especially
during afternoons. Hypothermia can cause death even during the summer
especially when swimming or wading for long periods. Watch out for
yourself, its the only self you'll ever have.

Ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble ramble!

Vice president of Ramblers
