3.) Matt Chamberlain is involved with arrangements for a canyoneering trip:
************************************************************
Greetings All,
I would like to let you know about another Orienteering event coming up
that some of you could (or should) be interested in. The Tucson
Orienteering Club has organized a full weekend of events for September
15-16. The venue will be on the Mogollon Rim, at ~7500 ft, between Payson
and Show Low. It should be a hell of a lot cooler than Tucson and a lot of
fun. There will be the Arizona State Orienteering Champs starting from
10:00am on Saturday. Please, don't let the title scare you off because it
is still open to anyone; there will be a full range of courses, from
dead-easy-white to not-so-easy-red. There is a separate night time event
for any apprentice rogainers out there. On the Sunday there are 2 events,
including something called a Billy Goat (an endurance/cross
country/orienteering course) and a Score-O for those "not ready for the
Billygoat." For those that are unfamiliar with orienteering, it is a get
way to get outdoors and to practice your map reading + navigation skills.
There are people to time how long you are on the course, but you can go at
your own pace. The selection of courses provided is designed to cater to
*all* levels of experience. Pre-registration is required for Saturday
events and the Billygoat. This has to be done by Wednesday next week. See
the website for details. The website has details of the costs for the
events (they're not expensive) and more information about orienteering. I
am happy to help coordinate rides for people who are interested in going.
The sort of information I would need is can you drive, do you need a lift,
and what events/what days do you want to enter? I will be going to the
event this time, though only entering an event on Sunday. The Saturday I
will be checking out some canyons in the Mogollon Rim area, which people
are welcome to come along to as well. However, rope skills are a must for
those to go through these canyons; they are that good!
Interested in any of the above and still have questions? Try emailing me.
Cheers,
Matt Chamberlain
************************************************************
Contact Matt Chamberlain at [mc@lpl.arizona.edu] if interested. Also the
web address of the event is:
[http://members.home.net/tucsonorienteering/events.htm]. You will find
links to more information about orienteering on the sites. You are able to
enter any of the events as an individual or as a team.
4.) Robbie would like to do a sunset hike to Desert Peak in the near future.
This hike is rated "C+", with some boulder hopping. If you want to go,
contact Robbie at (robbie@email.arizona.edu) and tell him what times are
good for you.
5.) Torsten is leading a trip, with information as follows:
************************************************************************
I will be leading a trip for the evening of Saturday, Nov 17 to watch the
Leonids meteor shower. This year there is no moon interference like last
year. The predictions for meteor rates are quite a bit better for this year
than last year, but as always meteor predictions are not terribly reliable.
The trip will involve camping somewhere far away from city lights. Torsten
************************************************************************
If interested, contact Torsten [tclay@physics.arizona.edu].
6.) Joe has 2 hikes in mind for the time, when it gets cooler. He would
like to go to the Picacho mountains (and possibly the Peak too) around late
Nov-Dec. He would also like to do a long day hike from Mt. Lemmon out
Sabino Canyon. More info is coming at the next few meetings.

Announcing the second annual Sky Island Festival
The Sky Island Festival is a very exciting and dynamic series of events
that celebrate the biological and cultural diversity of America's most
unique region. Where else do jaguars hunt the same ridges as Mexican
wolves, or noble goshawks take thick-billed parrots on the wing? Where
else do tropical and temperate species mix and mingle? Where else are there
more mammals, more ants, more reptiles? No where but the Sky Islands. We
could go on for hours about this special place we all call home, but we'd
rather do it for a whole month! Join the Sky Island Alliance this October
