Minutes for Meeting of 10-17-2001
GENERAL INFORMATION:
-
The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in
room 307.
-
All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking
lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available
all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
-
Sunday, Ross led a nice group of eight to Seven Falls. They departed
from the Bear Canyon Road trailhead and had a leisurely hike under excellent
hiking conditions. The water flowing in the falls was a bit low but the
pools were still very cold and deep. The only wildlife encountered
were some fish Ross spotted while swimming in the pools.
-
Michael led a group of three to the Pinaleno Mountains this past Sunday.
The trails of choice were the Heliograph and Grant Loop. The Heliograph
trail provides the highest lookout tower in the Coronado National Forest
at an impressive 99ft tall. Unfortunately, you can only climb 3/4ths of
the way up. It was a beautiful hike as the conditions were perfect (clear,
cool and sunny) and the Aspens were turning a bright yellow contrasting
nicely with the dark evergreens.
-
Erich, accompanied by a friend, went camping for one night at Solider
camp in the southern Catalinas. This location is south of Bear Canyon and
east of Seven Falls. The next day he hiked to Gibbon Peak and had a wonderful
time.
-
Susan, once more, took a relaxing hike in the Finger Rock area.It was
very tranquil as there were no mountain lion sightings.

The school of Renewable and Natural Resources is hosting an annual
deer and javelina drive. The purpose of the drive is to get a population
count of the animals. They are in a large enclosure and it would be considered
a vigorous hike as it would entail hiking in and out of canyons. The group
of 'drivers' usually camp out the night before and have a nice bonfire.
If you are interested in this please contact Chasa at
chasa2002@yahoo.com.
-
Matt Chamberlain's mini rogaine is this Sunday, October 21st. Registration
