Minutes for Meeting of 10-31-2001

GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in room 307.
  • All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
  • Michael led a group of seven on a lovely sunset hike this past Sunday. The sun set on the way up the 4687ft summit of Wasson Peak. They reached the peak at 6:40 and enjoyed the night view of Tucson and I-10. On the hike back down they saw a skunk but managed not to bother it too much.
  • Torsten participated in a mini-rogaine two weekends ago. The area covered was approximately 4km squared. It was his first, but he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely do it again.
  • Joe went "deer hunting" last weekend in the Wetstones. They covered about 18 miles of beautiful territory and saw some old mine shafts. Wildlife was prolific as they spotted blue herons and about 18-19 whitetail does.
  • Erich hiked a cool eleven hours up to Window Peak. He began in Ventana canyon and continued up to the 2nd highest peak in the western Santa Catalinas.
  • Although Jay was unable to attend our Halloween meeting he did send me info about a hike he led last weekend. His message is as follows: FYI, we did hike in the Mt. Wrightson area on Saturday. There were three of us who showed up and decided to brave the Vault Mine Trail. It was a beautiful day for a hike anywhere... that was a good thing, because even though we found the Vault Mine, we lost the trail several times, and finally lost it for good. (Perhaps we should have turned left at Albuquerque?) But with a little bushwhacking and a mad scramble to the top of a ridge, we hooked back up with another leg of the planned route. Total time, including a leisurely lunch break, was about 4 hours. Total distance was on the order of 5 or 6 miles. Elevation change was around 2500 feet. Next on the agenda: take the route backwards to see if the Vault Mine Trail is easier to follow in the other direction! (An energetic day trip to the top of Mt. Wrightson is also in the works.)
FUTURE HIKES:
  • Susan is planning a nice hike in Ventana Canyon for this Sunday. It will depart from PSU at 2:00pm and it should conclude around 5pm.
