Minutes for Meeting of 11-21-2001
GENERAL INFORMATION:
-
The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in
room 307.
-
All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking
lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available
all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
-
Torsten and 9 others went to see the Leonids meteor shower in the
Chiricahuas at 8300 ft. of elevation braving temperatures in the upper
20's though it could have been colder. By 3am it really picked up.
About 1 every second shot across the sky on average with 2 or 3 at once.
Most of the meteors were green, with some red or white larger ones.
The group enjoyed a nice, warm fire as well and shared Oreos and mixed
nuts. After sleeping in the morning sun and enjoying one last look at
the beautiful views, they returned home.
-
Monday, Steve Nicolosi went to Sycamore reservoir, or what is
left of it, and saw a doe and her cute little fawn that he almost didn't
recognize as a deer. The streams that feed the reservoir were dry so
the water going over the dam was all from an underground source. The
dam supposedly leaks as well.
FUTURE HIKES:
-
Loretta is still planning a hike to some hot springs in the Gila Wilderness
of New Mexico. They will be departing on Saturday November 24th and returning
Monday November 26th. You can e-mail Steve Newcomb with questions. His e-mail
is sanewcomb@yahoo.com.
-
Massimo is planning and extra jaunt to White Sands, in connection with
Loretta's trip. He has already left, but he will be returning Sunday, as
opposed to Monday.
-
Joe is planning a long day hike that entails hiking from Mt. Lemmon
down to Tucson. It is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in
December. If you are interested contact him via e-mail at
jleisz@ag.arizona.edu.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-
Shield yourself from sun, rain, snow, and moonlight. You can purchase a
quality hat from Stephen Nicolosi (email:
nicolosi@mindspring.com).
The item is in superb condition and comes complete with a hat box for
$17.42. It is a Fur Felt, Country Boots, Outback style hat, made in
Australia. The size is probably "Large". The color label says
Safari Green. You can see photos of the hat at the URL:

-
Susan put up about 35 flyers advertising the Ramblers Hiking Club.
Many thanks for her efforts.
-
Hanna is planning a volunteer opportunity in which Ramblers would go to
Millshoe Ranch where they are working to restore overgrazed land and
refine grazing techniques. It would encompass an entire weekend of which
the first day would include various odd jobs such as fence removal,
painting or weed pulling. The second day would be available for hiking
in the area. She is leaning more towards a weekend in January, so more
information will be posted at a later date.
