Minutes for Meeting of 02-13-2002

GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in room 307.
  • All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
  • Ross and four others braved this past Sunday's "mystery hike" along Solider Trail. They hiked to Prison Camp and then down to Sycamore Canyon Reservoir. It was quite windy, which led to cool temperatures but overall it was an enjoyable hike.
  • Erich and six others hiked to Cathedral rock this past Sunday. It was very windy and the entire trip took 11 hrs. Cathedral rock is the highest peak in that area of the Catalinas and provides a wonderful view. There was a little snow at the top but enough to be of any consequence.
  • Robbie, three weeks ago, hiked along the Esperero Trail in the Catalinas. He hiked to the base of the canyon before turning around. It was a nice hike and a beautiful day.
  • Michael, while spending a few weeks at the observatory atop Mt.Graham, was able to do some short afternoon hikes in the area.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • Susan will be leading a hike this coming Saturday. The hike will be along the Cochise Trail in the Dragoon Mountains and is nine miles roundtrip. As it takes two hours to get to the trailhead the group will meet at PSU at 9:30am and return, at the latest, by 10:00pm. You should bring lunch, H20, and money for gas, parking and dinner (probably fast-food).
  • Sunday, the 17th, the Tucson Orienteering Club is holding its monthly meet nearby at Redington Pass.
This month there are several courses being set. There will be regular orienteering-style easy courses set out. However, instead of intermediate to advanced orienteering courses there are 2 "Billy-Goat" courses. These are a little longer than normal (7 or 12 km, will take 2 to 3 hours(?) )and everyone starts the course at the same time. Starting at the same time means that you can get away with just following someone else who looks like they know where they are going :)
For more details about the course and logistics about the event see the webpage and links...
    http://members.home.net/tucsonorienteering/
You will see that they are trying to encourage people to carpool, something that starving students should be doing anyway. There are entry fees involved, including a $ incentive to carpool. For full details I refer you to the website.
If you are interested in "The Goat", note that you should preregister by next Wednesday or be content with copying the map by hand on the day! The contact to preregister is on the web. As I have tried to communicate before, these events are excellent opportunities to test - and improve! - your navigation skills. Something that might come in handy if you're ever outdoors.
    Hope to see you there,
    Matt.
