Minutes for Meeting of 02-27-2002

GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in room 307.
  • All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
  • Will and his family spent some time in the Sycamore canyon area recently. They hiked a short distance into the canyon and Will noted that he would like to go further into it next time. It was a great trip and he saw several interesting birds that he had never seen before.
  • Hanna's mystery outing this past Saturday evening was a trip to the only ice staking rink in Tucson. Much fun was had by all!
  • Joe's mystery hike this past Saturday was along the Southerland trail in the Catalinas. They enjoyed a lovely seven mile hike.
  • Erich also spent some time along the Southerland trail last weekend. However, he camped out and enjoyed himself thoroughly.
  • Michael, this past Saturday, went canyoneering with Matt in Willow canyon. They began in the Catalinas and hiked and rapelled until they reached Seven Cataracts. There they took a little swim in a small, frigid pool.
  • JJ, two weeks ago, hiked 3.5 miles into Ventana Canyon. He saw two rainbows around the sun and a small snake.
  • Jon, who is a veteran Rambler that resides in California, talked about some of his favorite hikes. He mostly does day hikes along the coast ranges. One of his favorites is Blue Ridge, which is near East lake and has a view of the Sierra Crest. He also enjoys hiking the virgin forests in Armstrong Redwood National Park.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • Torsten is planning a 3-4 day backpacking trip in the Rincons during the first part of spring break. The exact dates are flexible. Contact him if interested or with suggestions at tclay@physics.arizona.edu.

  • Hiroko would like to lead a gourmet hike in April. This will be a leisurely hike that you bring really good food and drinks on. She is open to ideas and suggestions about trails and the hike in general. Contact her at hirokoo@prodigy.net.

  • SUMMIT HUT ANNOUNCES BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL WORLD TOUR
(Tucson, AZ) - Please join the Summit Hut for the following event at MUSE, 516 N. 5th Avenue, north of 6th Street, on Sunday, March 17, 3:30 and 7 p.m.
The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to Tucson on Sunday, March 17 with the world's best mountain films and videos. This year the Summit Hut brings two different shows, at 3:30 and 7 p.m., for an afternoon of adventure and an evening of adrenaline. The World Tour is presented by Eagle Creek Travel Gear and the National Geographic Society.
The Banff Film Festival World Tour brings some of the best of the annual film festival's awe-inspiring and breathtaking videos and films on diverse topics of mountain culture including: mountaineering, paddle sports, rock climbing, snow sports, wildlife, and people and culture. The shorts range from under five minutes long to almost an hour in length. The final slate of films (each show will be different) is chosen the day of the event, but will probably include some of the following. For the adrenaline-craving viewer selections might include: a free-wheeling mountain unicycle (yes, unicycle) descent of Pico de Orizaba in Mexico; footage of frenetic snow sports enthusiasts hurtling down extreme angles at breakneck speeds; and BASE- and rock tower jumpers flinging themselves from unimaginable heights. For the adventurous at heart but more contemplative viewer, the festival offers profiles of legendary climbers and adventurers like Alex Lowe and the pioneers of K2 ascents, and gorgeously filmed cultural encounters in faraway lands.
Tickets are $8 each or $15 for both shows if purchased at the same time. A portion of the proceeds will be contributed to the Sky Island Alliance and Pima Trails Association. Tickets are available only at Summit Hut: 5045 E. Speedway and 605 E. Wetmore, or online at [www.summithut.com]. Previous years' showings have sold out.
The Summit Hut is a locally-owned Tucson business that has been equipping backpackers, climbers, campers, hikers, adventure travelers and outdoor enthusiasts with quality gear and clothing for over 30 years.
For additional information, call Terri Gay or Sharon Scott at (520)-325-1554 or email [sharon@summithut.com].
