GENERAL INFORMATION:
-
The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in
room 307.
-
All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking
lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available
all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
-
Andrew hiked solider trail up to Prison Camp and back two Saturdays
ago. He had a nice time although he is still planning to hike the trail
up and follow the canyon down at a later date. Last weekend he went backpacking
with a group of boyscouts in the Rincons. They hiked along the Tanque Verde
Trail and the Douglass Spring Trail.
-
Will did some hiking in Florida canyon recently. There weren't any flowers
and only a little water but the area was quite nice even if it was a little
chilly at Florida Saddle. Last week, he did some road closing mantienace
and hiking in the Dragoon Mountains with the Sky Island Alliance. The area
he hiked in was very interesting because of the large rock formations.
-
Travis went to Gates Pass recently and hiked around but didn't take
any specific trails.
-
Robbie, during the break, took a road trip to Sedona that included
a very scenic and low travelled driving route. On the way to Sedona he camped
in the Hasasayampa Wilderness area between the Belmonts and Flat Irons in the
Hasasayampa Plain. There he saw moths, birds and running water. He also
spent some time in the Prescott valley and saw a lot of antelope.
-
Hanna, on Tuesday, went with some of her family to the Bigelow Conservatory
and hiked part of the Butterfly Trail. It was a really nice day out and
her mother was excited about the prospect of seeing a mountain lion although
none were spotted.
-
Ross took a bike hike to a Spring training game this past Thursday.
The game was fun but the biking part was another story...
-
Lenny and a friend hiked Mt.Kimble over the break. They lost the trail
almost immediately and bushwhacked up the side of the mountain where they
discovered more lost souls. The view from the top was very nice and thankfully
the afternoon went by much smoother.
-
Susan and about 10-12 others attended the Sushiswing this past Saturday.
It was quite a wild time and everyone enjoyed hearing Torsten play his fiddle.
-
Wolfgang has been on some hiking trips with the Southern Arizona Hiking
Club. On Saturday, he did a 9 mile hike up Superstition peak in the
Superstition Mountains. It was mostly on trail or a route, and some
sections were steep. They had excellent views of Weaver's Needle, 4 Peaks,
and the other ranges. The view west, toward Phoenix, was not so nice, since
it was very hazy. Two weeks ago, on Sunday, he was on another hike in the
Superstitions, which was up Iron Mountain, Montana Peak, and Hackberry
Butte. This was also another very scenic part of the Superstition range to
hike.
FUTURE HIKES:
-
If anyone has any future hikes they are planning please send them to
the listserv!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
-
Next week the Ramblers will meet down the hall from where the meetings
are usually held. If you are in the Forbes bldg. and facing room 307, you
would travel down the hall on your left and the room is a few doors down
on the right.
-
-April 11-14 is UofA's Spring Fling at Rillito Downs. We will be co-sponsering
a basketball game booth with the Collegiate 4-H club. This will be a great
opportunity for our club to raise money to buy new equipment. Please begin
to think about your schedule for that weekend and if/when you would be available
to help work the booth. There will be more information later.
-
Robbie is announcing two guest speakers that will be visiting the campus
in the following weeks. Carl Olsen will be speaking Next Thursday night in
the Forbes bldg. room 307. His topics will be about arthropods in the Southwest.
On April 11th Carolyn Campbell from the Coalition of the Sonoran Desert will
be speaking about the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. I'm sure that Robbie
will send more detailed announcements about these speakers later.
