Minutes for Meeting of 04-17-2002

GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in room 307.
  • All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
  • Hanna, two weeks ago Saturday, went birding in the Catalina State Park. She was looking for Phainopeplas but they were being stubborn that morning and they didn't come out until around lunch. Two weeks ago Sunday, she and Steve Newcomb went hiking in Pima Canyon and did some birding along the way. The area was bueatiful and they spotted a Towhee.
  • Erich, last Saturday, hiked along the Bog Spring Trail in the Catalinas. There were beuatiful rock formations and the hike itself was quite nice.
  • Michael was in Cozumel recently for a conference. He and his colleagues did some hiking and exploring around some Mayan ruins. They also experienced a tropical thunderstorm firsthand and the power of a VW Beetle zipping through the jungle. He returned to the states with quite a tan.
  • Wolfgang went on Joseph Wood's interesting trip up this beautiful and interesting canyon near Thedore Roosevelt Lake this past Sunday. It was a very nice sunny day, and the Salome Creek flows through this canyon, which is also known as "The Jug". It involved hiking, swimming, and rapelling. Along the way there were lots of pools, and the water was flowing, despite the drought. The rapelling involved going down this 35 ft waterfall into a pool. The water was just the right temperature, and it was good to do some swim-hiking. The canyon walls are also spectacular, since they have pink granite and rock shaped in such interesting shapes, attributed to the abrasive action of the flowing water. In addition, there was abundant riparian vegetation.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • Michael and Dan are planning a KICK-ASS hike for Saturday. They are hiking the Esperero Trail in Sabino Canyon to Cathedral Rock. It is 9 miles one way. This will be an "A" hike. They would like to leave early, around seven. If you are planning to go you must email Dan to work out transportation! His email is dcarroll@u.arizona.edu. You will need food, water and sunscreen.
  • Hanna is trying to plan a backpacking/beach trip between May 12-28. she would like the trip to consist of 3-4 days backpacking along the Pacific Crest Trail and a day or so lounging on the beach. The part of the PCT that she would like to do would be somewhere within the Lagunas in Southern California. She would like to see interest before any specific plans are made. If you are interested please email her with the dates that would fit your schedule, how long you'd like to be gone and if you have a vehicle. (If you don't have a vehicle that's OK you are still welcome.) Her email is hanna@u.arizona.edu.
