Minutes for Meeting of 04-24-2002

GENERAL INFORMATION:
  • The Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Building in room 307.
  • All hikes, unless otherwise stated, will meet for departure in the parking lot behind the Park Student Union. After 8pm on Friday the lot is available all weekend for general use.
PAST HIKES:
  • Hanna went on a fieldtrip in the Santa Rita experimental range last week. They hiked along the Florida trail in search of birds. The two most interesting birds they mis-netted were a Common Poorwill and an Elf Owl. They also caught some Cactus Wrens and Warblers. (They had a permit) The Elf Owl was especially cool.
  • Will hiked to the end of Sabino Canyon and back and had great time in the process. He saw a Wilson Warbler and a dead Sidewinder.
  • Steve hiked to Seven Falls recently. He saw quite a few generic birds and generic fish along with a turtle swimming in the largest pool. However, the high point of the day was a gila monster spotting.
  • Michael, and a few others, endured the kick-ass hike last Saturday. They took Esperrero Trail to the top of Cathedral Rock and back down again. They began their day around 8 and reached the top by 2:30. Overall it was worth the ass-kicking 18 miles.
  • Michael, on Sunday, participated in an orienteering meet in the Buenos Aires Wildlife Area. He chose the Rogaine course and did fairly well by reaching 80-85% of the controls.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • Massimo is planning to hike to Ventana Window by way Ventana Canyon Trail. I think I am the worst secretary ever because I don't know if he was planning this for Saturday or Sunday [It was Saturday - the webmaster]. However, I do know that he wants to leave around 7 since it is a fairly grueling hike. If you are interested in this hike please contact him for the proper date and to establish a meeting place. His email is malagoli@u.arizona.edu.
  • Hanna is trying to plan a backpacking/beach trip between May 12-28. she would like the trip to consist of 3-4 days backpacking along the Pacific Crest Trail and a day or so lounging on the beach. The part of the PCT that she would like to do would be somewhere within the Lagunas in Southern California. She would like to see interest before any specific plans are made. If you are interested please email her with the dates that would fit your schedule, how long you'd like to be gone and if you have a vehicle. (If you don't have a vehicle that's OK you are still welcome.) Her email is hanna@u.arizona.edu.
