Minutes for Meeting of 08-28-2002

HOWDY RAMBLERS-
I have been experiencing severe technical difficulties so I apologize for the delay and lack of format. Thanks for understanding! Mary Triplett

PAST HIKES:
  • Dan and Shannon recently completed an expedition north of Bullhead in Nevada. Also, they attempted some specimen collecting in the San Pedro river for Shannon's research. A locked gate caused some problems so they went to Herferd and gathered some crayfish and bullfrog tadpoles. They also ran into some lizards and bees (thankfully not the killer kind).
  • Andrew, over the summer, did some traveling around the Great Lakes. He and his grandparents drove counterclockwise around Lake Superior and completed some small day hikes in the area. They also took a ferry boat ride across Lake Michigan. The trip was quite enjoyable as he had never visited the region before.
  • Darcy, spent some time in the Chiricaua's where she completed a primitive skills course. She learned lots of interesting things including how to make fire.
  • Ross, last week, hosted movie night. They saw "Duck Soup" and consumed hardy amounts of potatoes, beer and rice (not necessarily in that order).
  • Joe, recently, did some hiking and backpacking in New Mexico. He spent some time at an old camp, in the Cimmiron and Taos area, from which he made some of his expeditions. Also, he did some fire restoration work as well.
  • Liz, completed some backpacking in the Alleghenies of Pennsylvania before heading out west for school. After her trip she picked up her first hitchhiker who happened to be hitchhiking from the Easternmost point in the continental US to the westernmost point.
  • Erin, worked for Fish and Wildlife this summer and studied Mt. Jemez Salamanders in New Mexico. While she wasn't researching she did some hiking in the Mt. Jemez area.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • If anyone would like to meet and "hike" to the UA football game together contact Dan for more info. 271-6916 or dcarroll@u.arizona.edu
  • Remember Bithika's hike:
We are planning on a camping/hiking trip to White Mountains, Show Low, this Saturday. We are already 3/4 people into the plan. If anyone else is game for it, just email me. This is a kind of tentative plan:
We leave on Saturday from Tucson. We follow the Diamond Rock #81 trail and camp overnight at the Diamond Rock Camp Ground. This is close to the Mainstream Black River. Drinking water is available near this camping ground. Next day we hike around. There are few trails like Fish Creek #60 and #320 that we could follow. We can either camp again on Sunday night and come back Monday, or can just hike around the whole of Sunday and come back late on Sunday evening. Hope to hear from you soon
