Minutes for Meeting of 09-11-2002

HOWDY RAMBLERS-
  • Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in the room at the top of the southern stairs.
  • Hikes meet in the parking lot behind Park Student Union (PSU) unless otherwise stated. During the weekend these spaces are available for public use.
Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.
PAST HIKES:
  • A crowd of 19 hiked to Lemmon Pools this past Sunday. It was overcast during the hike in, so only a few brave souls ventured into the pools for a swim. Those that swam said it was frigid. They decided to begin hiking out once it started to thunder. A light drizzle fell during the hike out but everyone made it out alive and unhurt except for some bee stings.
  • Hanna, Lenny and Andy went on a "death-march"/hike along an old railroad grade in Limestone Canyon near Prescott recently. The grade was hard to follow and they became separated but later rejoined thanks to some handy walkie-talkies. They found a lot of railroad spikes and gun shells along the way. Overall, it was very interesting.
  • Brad, two weeks ago, hiked down the Mt. Lemmon trail, took the Wilderness of Rocks trail and then completed his 9 mile loop with the Lookout trail. The Lookout trail turned out to be a quick way to make an easy trip hard and he doesn't recommend it if you're looking for a leisurely hike.
  • Ross plus six others saw "Night of the Hunter" last Thursday night. It was a bit creepy but interesting nevertheless. The had something Italian to eat, which I can't spell.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • Saturday, Dan will be leading a hike to Seven Falls, a 6 mile round trip. The meeting time is TENTATIVE at this moment. Since a hike to Seven Falls is mostly a desert hike, the best time to get there, in regards to the heat, would be in the early morning or late afternoon. So, the TENTATIVE time is 7am which would put you to arrive back no later than 2pm. Meet at PSU and bring H2O, food, sunscreen and possibly raingear (check the forecast).
  • Sunday, Ross will lead a hike along the Bog Spring-Kent Spring loop trail in the Santa Ritas. He will be meeting at PSU at 11am. This is approximately a 7 mile round trip. Bring H2O, sunscreen, and food.
  • Sunday, there is a possibility of another trip to Lemmon Pools. Be on the lookout for more information.
  • Hanna is considering a trip to the Huachucas on the 21st and 22nd of September. She wants to leave around 4 or 5 Saturday afternoon and camp north of Miller Peak. On Sunday she wants to hike Miller Peak and then return to Tucson. This is a B+/A- hike. If you are interested in this trip you must contact her and tell her of your interest. She can be reached at 884-0131 or haacoy@yahoo.com.
  • Will would like to hike Mt.Wrightson in late September or early October, so be on the lookout for more information.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Movie Night, tonight, will begin at Ross's house at 111 West 17th St. You can arrive between 5pm and 7pm for food and drink. Around 7:30 there will be a short hike with negligible elevation change to La Placita, where "The Thin Man" will be featured. For more information call Ross at 241-2022.
  • Dan went to an ASUA meeting to get the Ramblers official club recognition for this school year. We also have an appointment to talk about funding. So, hopefully we can begin getting some new club equipment soon.
  • We will be having a T-shirt design contest soon, so begin thinking about designs and/or slogans.
  • Saturday, September 28th, is the date of the Arboretum dedication. Refreshments will be served beginning at 9am. If you would like to lead campus plant tours during the dedication, the training date is Wednesday, September 18th at 9am. Contact Margaret Livington at mlivings@u.arizona.edu.
