Minutes for Meeting of 09-18-2002

HOWDY RAMBLERS-
  • Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in the room at the top of the southern stairs (#307).
  • Hikes meet in the parking lot behind Park Student Union (PSU) unless otherwise stated. During the weekend these spaces are available for public use.
Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.
PAST HIKES:
  • A new member, Chris, told us about a hike he did over the course of a semester or so from Mexico to Tahoe along the Pacific Crest Trail. It took him about 2.5 months to complete the journey. Quite impressive!
  • Florin went with the geosciences department on a moonlight hike up Wasson Peak on Friday. They started at 6PM and returned at 12AM. The peak was a great place to have a picnic.
  • A group of SEVEN went to Seven Falls on Saturday from 7AM to 2PM. They were lucky enough to see a Gila Monster on their hike. They also enjoyed the very cool waters of the fast flowing falls. Several jumped from the cliffside into one of the pools. Mike left to find a bathroom and found a cactus instead.
  • A group of 10 went with Ross to Bog Springs/Kent Spring in the Santa Rita Mountains. They left at 1PM after one of the vehicles "exploded", and returned at 4:30PM.
FUTURE HIKES:
  • On Friday, September 20, @ 7-10:30 PM there will be an evening of awesome presentations and discussion about the desert region. The keynote presentations include Dave Foreman and Paolo Soleri whom have been noted on a regional and national level for their work in desert preservation and community design. The event will take place in Grammage Auditorium. For details contact either Richard A. Malloy @ 480-456-4072 or the Ramblers faculty advisor, Dr. Birky @ birky@u.arizona.edu or by calling 626-6513 or 626-5108. There may be an additional posting with directions by Dr. Birky sometime before tommorrow.
  • Friday night, Will is leading a sunset hike in the Tucson Mountains. Meet at PSU around 5, then drive out to Gates pass or a bit further, hike a bit, watch the sunset, then return to psu probably by 7:30. The moon is near full so it's a good time. If someone knows a good trails there please suggest it. Otherwise, a little past the desert museum is the Hugh Norris trail which is a good one. Please RSVP to williamnelson@earthlink.net so he can get an idea of interest, and if you have a vehicle let him know.
  • Dan may be out of town this weekend, so those of you who cannot make Hanna's trip but want to hike on Saturday may want to post a hike to the list for Seven Falls again or Hutch's Pool if anyone has been there before, or just a trip up to Mt. Lemmon for a short hike.
  • Hanna's latest update has been posted to the list. She is leaving SATURDAY at 4PM. Please arrange for gear early if it is needed.
    Here is her email:
    Hi Ramblers,
This is an update on my plans for this weekend.
I'd like to leave PSU on Saturday at 4pm and drive to Miller Canyon. We can find a place to car camp around there and have dinner. In the morning, I'd like to hike up to the ridge of the Huachucas by way of Miller Canyon, and from there we can hike in any number of directions, including the high point of the range (which is at 9466 ft -- we will camp around 4800 ft the night before). After we've explored the trails to our content, I'd like to rive back to Tucson, with a stop for dinner along the way, perhaps in Tombstone. I intend to be back in town no later than 10 (probably earlier).
The forecast for the weekend is in the low-mid 80s for Sierra Vista, with a small chance of rain on Sunday. It will be cooler in the mountains, and the chance of rain may also be greater.
If you're planning to go, please let me know, and bring gear for camping. I will provide a stove and some pots, and I'd prefer to do a group meal on Saturday night, so keep me posted. If you need camping gear, let Dan know and you can borrow some from the club. You can best reach me by replying to this message.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the area, the Huachucas is a range of mountains along the border of the U.S. and Mexico. Coronado Nat'l Monument is at one end. There are excellent views into Sonora from the top, and all kinds of interesting critters in the canyons, including tropical migrants like Trogons.
  • Ross will probably lead a hike on SUNDAY meeting at PSU at 9AM. They will go up Soldier Trail arriving back at campus before 5PM at the latest.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Movie Night, tonight, will begin at Ross' house at 111 West 17th St. You can arrive between 5pm and 7pm for food and drink. Around 7:30 there will be a short hike with negligible elevation change to La Placita, where "High Noon" will be featured. For more information call Ross at 241-2022.
  • We will be having a T-shirt design contest soon, so begin thinking about designs and/or slogans.
  • Saturday, September 28th, is the date of the Arboretum dedication. Refreshments will be served beginning at 9am. If you would like to lead campus plant tours during the dedication, the training date is Wednesday, September 18th at 9am. Contact Margaret Livington at mlivings@u.arizona.edu.
