Minutes for Meeting of 10-23-2002
HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.
-Hikes meet in the parking lot behind Park Student Union (PSU) unless
otherwise stated. During the weekend these spaces are available for public
use.
-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.
PAST HIKES:
-Will, last weekend, did a short but nice hike in Pima canyon. An abundance
of bees and a giant orange centipede kept him company along the way.
-Mike endured an agonizingly slow hike to Seven Falls with his parents
this past weekend. Despite the nonexistent river, the falls were trickling
and the pools were full enough for a nice swim. Later during the weekend,
Mike and his parents toured Colossal Caves. Thankfully this trip went a bit
quicker thanks to an harried tour guide wielding a cattle prod. (Although
painfully funny, the part about the cattle prod isn't true. I'm just in a
good mood.)
-Hanna and Lenny attempted a "daring and brave expedition" up the Mt.
Lemmon Ski-lift. Once at the summit they hiked along the grueling and "treacherous"
1/4 mile Meadow Trail, where they were nearly trampled by stampeding tourists,
fighting for the last of Hanna's freeze-dried fare. After their descent,
they worked on building their endurance along the arduous Geology Vista Trail.
(My adjective vocabulary has now been depleted...or has it)
-Erich, the lucky scientist he is, has spent the month of September in
Japan. Besides hiking in the Japanese Alps (yes there are Alps in Japan)
he climbed a volcano located in the northern portion of the country. He found
the climate and geographic change between the frozen north and tropical
south quite interesting and distinctive. Since his return to the continental
48 he has been to Kartchener Caverns. Actually, he went this past Monday
and only had to wait half and hour for his half-filled (people wise that
is) tour to begin. The lesson here, if you want to visit the Caverns without
reservations, do so on a weekday.
-Erin, along with her parents, spent a night last weekend in the State
Campground at Lake Patagonia. It was a beautiful area, one she would like
to explore further at a later date.
-Ross, and his faithful movie-goers, spent last Thursday night at La
Placita watching "Baby Jane." The film was "very disturbing" and necessitated
a few recovery days.
FUTURE HIKES:
-Will, is thinking of leading a hike on Saturday. He would like to climb
Wasson Peak but hasn't decided on the trail. He is thinking that an afternoon
ascension and a twilight/moonlight descension would be fun. More details
later.
-Andrew will be leading a hike on Sunday in the Aspen Trail or Marshell
Gulch area. A specific trail will be decided on the day of the trip, in order
to meet the needs' of the hikers. If you want to see some fall foliage, this
is the trip for you. Meet in PSU at 7:30am. Plan on returning around 3-3:30pm
after a good helping of some pie.
- Laurie, will probably be hiking up to Hutch's pool this Saturday (Oct.
26) and hiking out on Sunday. I am looking for a person (or small group of
people) who would be interested in (a) hiking in and staying the night or
(b) hiking up and leaving on Saturday. If interested, please respond ASAP.
