Minutes for Meeting of 11-20-2002

HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.

-Hikes meet in the parking lot behind Park Student Union (PSU) unless
otherwise stated. During the weekend these spaces are available for public
use.

-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.

PAST HIKES:
-Wolfgang, this past Saturday, hiked up Sabino Canyon and then out Bear
Canyon. Seven Falls still had a trickle of water running into the pools.
Besides the scanty water, Wolfgang also saw one whitetail deer and several
jackrabbits.

-Will, this past Sunday, enjoyed some bird-watching in Ventana Canyon.
He spotted two humming birds, including a rather large one with an orange
beak.

-Steve hiked one of the nineteen Sycamore Canyons in the state of Arizona.
His specific canyon of choice was in the Atascosa range near Nogales. He
hiked about four miles in and noticed that water was still flowing. The sycamores
still had plenty of leaves to allow for the dappled trail effect which was
very cool.

-Joe and a crowd of about seven others hiked in their cars to Reddington
Pass to watch the meteor shower Monday night. Besides the meteors, there
was one coyote out and about as well. The shower wasn't as cool this year
in comparison to last year because of the full moon. However, it was still
a cool trip.

-Ross and Tina hiked around in the Reid Park Zoo yesterday. They arrived
mid-afternoon, right before feeding time, so all the animals were out and
active. They got to pet a rhino, as it walked right up to them. The otters
were making weird noises which was cool because who knew that otters made
noise at all?

FUTURE HIKES:
-Ross is planning to hike Pontotoc's Ridge, in the Catalinas, this Sunday.
He will be meeting at PSU at 10am. It is a "C" hike (moderately easy). Bring
lunch, appropriate hiking attire, and water. Also, bring a flashlight because
there is an old mine that you can explore. If you would like to meet at the
trailhead then be there at 10:30.

-On Saturday Nov 23 Andreas will be leading a hike from Sabino Canyon
through the
Catalina back country into Bear Canyon and back to the Sabino Canyon parking
lot. We will leave PSU at 8:15 am (note the new time!)
I can accomodate 4 people in my car. We will take the Sabino Canyon shuttle
(bring $6 for the ride, Shuttle service starts at 9am) to the upper end of
the Sabino Canyon road. From there it will take us about 6-7 hours to return
to the Sabino Canyon parking lot. We will stop by at Seven Falls in Bear
Canyon.
Although the trail covers some distance the change in altitude is moderate.
Bring water (2-3liters) and something for lunch. If it is a warm and sunny
day shorts and a sweater in the back pack in case it gets colder should do.
If not, long pants are the better choice. Sneakers are OK, however with boots
you get less dirt into your shoes. Bring a sun hat and sun glasses.
