Minutes for Meeting of 12-04-2002
HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.
-Hikes meet in the parking lot behind Park Student Union (PSU) unless
otherwise stated. During the weekend these spaces are available for public
use.
-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.
PAST HIKES:
-Steve led a group of eight on a hiking trip in the Gila Wilderness of
New Mexico during the holiday weekend. The group hiked the Turkey Creek trail
which was forested with cottonwood and sycamore trees. They made camp at
the entrance to Skeleton Canyon and then proceeded another mile to the hot
springs. They relaxed at the hot springs until dusk and then made there way
back down in the dark. At the campsite they enjoyed a community "pot-luck"
dinner. The weather was OK, not too cold and not too rainy. It was definitely
a nice excursion.
-Joe, over the holiday, did a little hiking in California. He hiked up
to the Deep Creek Hot Springs in the San Bernadinos. The trail was interesting
because for the first three miles out of five it bounded the burned area.
-Danny, while in Las Vegas for the holiday, hiked around the Red Rock
area for a few hours. It was cooler there than it has been here.
-Erich, yesterday, hiked up a mountain just south of Gates Pass. The
trail was not very clear and he had to do some scrambling near the top. The
weather was great except for all the smoke in the air.
FUTURE HIKES:
- Steve's hike:
I plan to hike along the Miller Canyon Trail in the Huachuca Mtns this
Saturday. It's 3.5 miles and 2800 ft to the Crest Trail, and another 2
miles or so to Miller Peak. The goal is the Crest Trail and will
probably hike some distance along it but doubt that I will make it to
the peak. A very steep trail that will be strenuous, but a beautiful
riparian area you can read about here:

The trail looks like this on a topo map:

Bring lunch, at least 2 liters of water, gas money and sun protection.
We may eat coming back depending on the time and people's desire.
I will not stop at the PSU unless someone RSVPs.
-Hanna is in the process of planning a ski trip for winter break, possibly
Dec. 26/27th-28/29th. The dates right now are pretty flexible, so if you
like the idea but the dates do not work for you then please email Hanna to
see if her schedule works with yours. Right now there are two options. 1)Downhill
skiing at Sunrise in the White Mountains. This would include camping on the
drive up and down. Fees would include a full or half-day lift ticket aprox
$35, rentals if needed aprox $20, and gas money. Option 2)Cross country skiing
at Hannigan's Meadow, east of Sunrise. For this trip there is a possibility
of staying in the lodge at Hannigan's Meadow. The fees for this trip would
include rentals if needed, gas money, and a split price of lodging or camping.
Please email Hanna if any of this sounds like something you would like to
do. Hanna's email: haacoy@yahoo.com
