Minutes for Meeting of 01-08-2003
Happy New Year Ramblers!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5 PM in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.
- The meeting place for hike departures is in the parking lot behind the
Park Student Union (PSU) unless otherwise stated. During the weekend these
spaces are available for public use. Don't worry if you don't have a car,
since we carpool from PSU.
PAST HIKES:
- Wolfgang did several day hikes during the holiday break. They were in
Saguaro National Park East and West. Also, this past Sunday, he went on a
hike with the Southern Arizona Hiking Club, up Gates Peak, which is in
Tucson Mountain Park. There were good views of the mountains west of
Tucson, especially the Quinlan Mountains (with Kitt Peak), and Baboquivari
Peak.
- Andrew did a couple of hikes in the Santa Catalina Mountains, during the
holiday break. On New Year's eve, he hiked to Hutchess Pool, via Sabino
Canyon. He also did a hike to bug spring, which is not far from Prison Camp.
- Joe did a winter trip with the Sky Island Alliance to Mendoza Canyon,
which is between the Quinlan Mountains and Coyote Peaks.
- Curvin did a trip to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, off of route 95.
The scenery was excellent; although, it was very cold at night - down about
19 degrees F.
- Tina did a hike up Bear Canyon to 7 Falls.
FUTURE HIKES:
- Steve is planning a hot spring expedition. If interested in this trip,
e-mail Steve at (sanewcomb@yahoo.com). The details are as follows:
***** ***** *****
DATES: Jan 17th-20th (Fri-Mon, King holiday)
PLACE: These hot springs are near the base of Hoover Dam. Since there is a
bypass to the dam being planned/built there, the idea would be to visit the
springs before any construction changes the ambience of the area. Here is
the general plan:
FRIDAY: Leave at 6 PM and camp at Kaiser Warm Spring along Hwy 93:
(http://www.wickenburg-az.com/daytrips/kaiserhotspring.html). The backup
plan is to car camp at the Burro Creek Campground nearby (in case of
weather or time of night).
SATURDAY: Leave early next morning and drive to just north of Hoover Dam to
check out the Gold Strike Hot Spring
(http://www.hikinglasvegas.com/slide%20shows/Gold_Strike/index.htm) during
the day. Leave early afternoon and drive south of the dam and backpack into
White Rock Canyon three miles
(http://www.nps.gov/lame/visit/azhothike.html,
http://hackles.org/photos/lasvegas/hot-spring.html) to the Arizona Hot
Spring. Camp out either along the shore of the Colorado or in a side canyon.
SUNDAY: Hike out after lunch and return to Tucson in evening.

Hello all,
I spoke with some of you today, left messages for others, and have not yet
contacted many of you. My name is Ross Lampert and I am leading a group
(Walking Bohemian Band of Hope) on a walk to Washington DC in protest of
the war. We are walking from Tucson Arizona on a southerly route to
Tallahassee Florida, then on to Washington. This is a 2500-mile journey and
we plan to take 100 days to complete it. We are currently planning on
leaving on the 22nd of February and arriving in DC on or around May 31st.
We would like to hold short rallies at the Governors Mansions in Austin and
Tallahassee before proceeding to DC. We will enter Washington with as many
people as we can get and as many signatures as we can muster. We will then
deliver these signatures to the US Senate and hold an anti-war rally in DC.
The reason I am sending you this email is in search of support. We welcome
support in all forms including: media attention, gear, food, water, other
supplies, places to stay along our path, signatures, people to walk with,
organization skills (to help with organizing rallys in Austin, Tallahassee,
and DC), legal assistance (in order to be aware of state pedestrian laws),
advice, money, etc.
Our route will be as follows:
I-10 from Tucson, AZ. to US 70 (Lordsburg, NM.)
US 70 to US 82 (3 miles past Alamogordo, NM.)
US 82 to New Mexico State Rte. 529 (6 miles past Loco Hills, NM.)
NM 529 to US 180 (15 miles before Hobbs, NM.)
US 180 to Texas State Rte. 6 (Albany, TX.)
Texas 6 to US 183 (Cisco, TX.)
US 183 to US 290 (Austin, TX.)
US 290 to US 90 (Houston, TX.)
US 90 to US 319 (Tallahassee, Fl.)
US 319 to US 221 (5 miles before Bartow, Ga.)
US 221 to US 1 (Louisville, Ga.)
US 1 to Washington, DC.
We are also setting up a web page and will send photos and updates along
the way. If you are against the war on Iraq, and you live on this path or
know people who do (especially West of Austin), please let me know. If I
have not contacted you yet, you will be hearing from me in the next few
days.
I thank you in advance.
Happy Holidays,
Ross M. Lampert
