Minutes for Meeting of 01-15-2003
HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room
307.
-Hikes meet in the parking lot behind Park Student Union (PSU)
unless otherwise stated. During the weekend these spaces are available for
public use.
-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.
PAST HIKES:
-Much Thanks to Steve for the excellent slide show on Wednesday!
-Wolfgang joined the Sky Island Alliance last weekend and went
animal tracking at the Audubon society. He saw quite a few tracks, including
some rabbit and javelina prints. Later, he saw a coyote roaming around Grant
Road.
-Hanna, Lenny, Steve, and Wolfgang, accompanied some other Ramblers
to the Temporal Gulch at Josephine Saddle on Sunday. During the 13 mile
hike over and down the saddle, only two Ramblers were lost and one injured
due to accidental body surfing. Hope those scrapes clear up Hanna! Wolfgang
found a bear track preserved in a patch of snow. All the Ramblers agreed that
this would be a beautiful trail in the spring.
-Rishi, last summer, spent some time hiking around in the Torey
Pines St.Park in San Diego. It was an astonishingly beautiful area in the
heart of Southern California. From the top of a mountain, he could look down
at the Pacific Ocean. Last semester, like any good Tucsonian, hiked to
Seven Falls in Sabino Canyon.
-Dan and Shannon took a skiing trip the weekend after Christmas.
There was not a lot of people, nor a lot of snow. However, they thoroughly
enjoyed themselves.
FUTURE HIKES:
-Steve, is planning some hikes for the future. Next weekend, he
would like to go backpacking in Catalina State Park from Romero Pass to
Sabino Canyon. It would like to stay one or two nights. In February, during
Rodeo weekend, Steve wants to go backpacking in the Blue Range Primitive
Area. He also is in the planning stages of a Spring Break backpacking trip to
Bryce Canyon.
-Ross is planning a practice 25 mile hike from his house to Tina's
grandmothers house on Sunday. Thy will be leaving at 6am from Ross's house. If you
want to know what they are practicing for read the clip below.
-Ross is planning a 110 mile hike from Tucson to Washington D.C. in
protest of the war on Iraq. He is leaving on Feb. 22nd from Reid Park after the
Tucson peace rally. His group will be marching approximately 25 miles a day.
-There are a few events coming up from the Tucson Orienteering Club
that may interest some of you.
- Here is come future events sent to me via Wolfgang:
There is a regular orienteering meet coming next week, Jan 19, in the
Silverbells, W and N of Tucson. Yen and I are planning on going to this
meet and have a couple of seats if anyone is looking for a ride.
In a couple of months there is a longer event, a 24 hour rogaine which
will be in the Little Rincons, the mountains on the other side of the "big"
Rincons. I am involved in preparing for this rogaine and was out
setting the course over the last few weekends. I can let you know that it has
some great views, some challenging controls to find and it should be a lot
of fun. These events are good ways to explore parts of Arizona that you
would not always get to. You have to register before the end of Feb for this
event.
More information about these events can be found on the club
websites...

For those how may not have heard me sing this song before, orienteering
and rogaining are great ways to 1. learn and 2. improve your navigation
skills... something that anyone who plays outdoors should be interested
in. These events are designed so people of all abilities can be part of it.
If you have any questions about what they are like, feel free to contact me.
Cheers,
Matt.
