Minutes for Meeting of 01-22-2003

HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.

-FYI: THE PARKING LOT BEHIND PARK STUDENT UNION IS CLOSED DUE TO
CONSTRUCTION
(IMAGINE THAT) SO SPECIFIC MEETING PLACES WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE HIKE
LEADER.

-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from PSU.

PAST HIKES:

-Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmothers house we go...
Ross, Tina, and Andrew hiked all 27.2 miles from Ross's residence to Tina's
grandmothers house this past Sunday. The trio left around 7:20am and arrived
at 6:30pm. The sunrise and sunset were quite beautiful, although I hear the
sunrise was much less painful than the sunset.

-Robbie joined the Sky Island Alliance this past weekend on a road survey
trip in the Needle's Eye Wilderness. The wilderness area was absolutely
gorgeous
and really cool because some of it was private land. Unfortunately, the trip
up the 35% grade trail from the campsite caught quite a few cars by surprise
and forced the mechanical engineer to come out in them all. Robbie highly
recommends taking trips with the Sky Island alliance because of their
conservation
efforts and their ability to access private land that would otherwise be
off limits.

-Steve, and three followers, had an amazing hot spring expedition last
weekend. One word described it all,...SPECTACULAR!

FUTURE HIKES:

-Ross and Tina are planning to follow in the footsteps of the original
Ramblers. In 1945, a group, later to be known as Ramblers, embarked upon
their first official club hike. Because they did not have automobiles, they
walked to "A" mountain and then scaled its lofty peak. (OK I'm getting carried
away). Anyway, Ross and Tina are planning to walk to "A" mountain and then
climb it. The difficulty level is a "B" in terms of distance and a "c" in
terms of difficulty relative to elevation change. They will be meeting at
the fountain in front of Old Main on Saturday at 8am. Bring H20, lunch, and
sun protection.

-Steve and Mary are planning to go to Romero Pass this Sat. morning by
way of Catalina State Park. If you want to go please RSVP by tomorrow. Anyone
who wants to go needs to park in Tyndall garage and meet at the stone wall
in front of the EAST side of Tyndall garage. (Pretend you are walking to
campus from the middle of the garage, you can't miss it, it separates Tyndall
Ave. from the parking lot of the Methodist Church)The time and day is 8:00
AM Sat. morning so we can be at the trailhead by 9:00. If no one RSVP's Steve
and I will not go to Tyndall since we both live on the Northwest side. We
will hike to Romero Pass, camp out, and hike out the next day by way of Hutch's
Pool. Mileage the first day will be about 7.5 miles, uphill most of the way.
Mileage the second day will be about 11 miles taking the Phoneline trail
out of Sabino Canyon, most of it downhill I believe. It will be cold at night
so bring a hat, gloves, long johns, whatever you need to stay warm. You need
enough food for lunch, dinner, breakfast, and whatever you want to snack
on. You may bring lunch for Sunday too since the mileage is longer and we
will probably stop to eat, maybe around Hutch's Pool since it is a nice area.
I can bring hot chocolate for all so bring a cup! Please RSVP by tomorrow
at 3:30 so Steve and I will know what to do about leaving a car at Sabino
Canyon.

-Robbie is planning to do an overnight trip in the Sawtooth Mountains
this weekend. He plans to leave Friday afternoon, make camp, and then do
some hiking on Saturday. He plans to return Saturday as well. It is IMPERATIVE
that you RSVP him by tomorrow (Thurs.) night so that you can work with each
others schedules and come up with a departure time. RSVP at 792-0970 no later
than 10pm tomorrow.

-Hanna has some volunteer opportunities for those of you interested in
botany, ecology, biology, or are just plain altruistic. She will be doing
some camping about once a month to measure the change in metabolic rates
of certain plants during the night. No experience is necessary. This is a
great way to get out in wild, practice research skills and have fun. Email
her if you are interested and she will email you with upcoming research dates.

-Curvin will be spending the entire summer exploring Alaska. If you would
like to spend any amount of time hiking, camping, and exploring Alaska this
summer, and you can transport yourself to Seward's Folly (the state of Alaska)
please feel free to check out Curvin's website and contact him to set up
some trips. www.redundancydept.com.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-Free Lift Tickets for Sunrise! If you test drive a car at O'Rielly
Chevrolet
you can get two lift tickets for free. Dan called ahead and found out which
salesman was offering them. Although the man on the phone said no more were
available, Dan went and got some anyway. He also noticed that the man had
a lot more. The key is to call and schedule a test drive with the salesmen
offering the deal, then casually mention that you heard about the offer after
you finish test driving the vehicle. Good Luck!

-If you have pictures of any of the Ramblers outings, please bring them
to a meeting ASAP. We are looking for pictures, preferably ones with people
in it, for our ASUA funded flyers.

-If you have an idea for a T-shirt design please email Dan or bring it
to a meeting ASAP. It can be a drawing, humorous slogan, etc. There will
be a prize for the winning design. Dan's email is dcarroll@u.arizona.edu
