Minutes for Meeting of 05-07-2003
HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.
-Our new meeting place is the rock wall across the street from the east
side of Tyndall Parking Garage. Here is a map of the location
http://clubs.arizona.edu/~ramblers/wall.html
-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from our meeting place.
PAST HIKES:
-Wolfgang hiked around in the Chiricahua National Monument this past
Saturday and Sunday. He car-camped on Saturday night outside of the monument
and drove back early Sunday morning. While there he had a great view of
Cochise?s Head and saw a javelina, turkey vultures, blue jays, and lots of lizards.
After returning on Sunday he spent the rest of the day at the Desert Museum.
-Steve led a group of eight to Solider Canyon last Sunday. They hiked
a small ways into the canyon and practiced rappelling, knot tying and
technical/emergency rope skills. Steve led the rope clinic and demonstrated many of the technical
skills that are required for emergencies and special circumstances.
-Hanna and a few others hiked down to the folk festival Saturday evening.
They took the trolley as far as it goes and then walked the rest of the way
into downtown. The music was pretty cool, but they found a hidden stage that
had all the best music and really enjoyed themselves.
FUTURE HIKES:
-Steve's hike:
Hike to Douglas Springs Trail to the campground and back in the Rincon
Mountains this Saturday. Meet at the Wall at 8am. Bring lunch, 3 liters
of water, sun protection and $1 for gas. Distance to campground is 6.2
miles. Rated a "B" in difficulty.
The Jug was excellent, but I'm putting off a second trip until I can
plan a multi-day journey through the entire Salome Canyon. Look for
this later in the summer.
-Curvin will be spending the entire summer exploring Alaska. If you would
like to spend any amount of time hiking, camping, and exploring Alaska this
summer, and you can transport yourself to Seward's Folly (the state of Alaska)
please feel free to check out Curvin's website and contact him to set up
some trips. www.redundancydept.com.
