Minutes for Meeting of 05-21-2003

HOWDY RAMBLERS-

-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room 307.
-Our new meeting place is the rock wall across the street from the east
side of Tyndall Parking Garage. Here is a map of the location
http://clubs.arizona.edu/~ramblers/wall.html
-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from our meeting place.

PAST HIKES:

-Dr. Birky has done some hiking over the past few weeks including Mt.
Wrightson, Seven Falls, and many shorter ones. While at Seven Falls, a few
weeks ago, he witnessed an amazing rescue.

-Joe backpacked up to Lemmon Pools a few weeks ago and did a little
swimming. The water was the coldest he has ever felt and left him quite numb and
shivering.

-Hanna, while doing some research, hiked around Rose Canyon Lake. The
lake had been allowed to fill since the last time she visited the area and
had been stocked with trout.

-Chad, while visiting Vegas, hiked the Black Velvet Trail in Red Rock
Canyon. It was a fun trail with a lot of scrambling and good areas for
bouldering and climbing.

-Steve led a group of five along the Douglass Spring Trail two weeks
ago. They hiked to the camp area and back for a total of twelve miles. There
was only a little water but the area was still nice.

-Will accompanied the Sky Island Alliance to an area in Patagonia, where
they did some trail maintenance and exotic plant removal. He saw a lot of
birds and some running water.

FUTURE HIKES:

    -Loretta's Backpack:
I have decided that I plan to backpack the West Fork
of Oak Creek over Memorial Day Weekend. I need to
know who is interested, what days you are available
and if you can drive. The hike could be 3 days doing
a car shuttle or 4 days going up the canyon and coming
back. This all depends on YOUR time available, since
I am flexible. We could hike Sat 5/24, Sun 5/25, Mon
5/26, or Fri 5/23, Sat 5/24, Sun 5/25, or Fri, Sat,
Sun, and Mon.
We would be hiking 14 miles of a gorgeous canyon.
This will be a relaxing-enjoying the scenery type of
trip. More details available at the following links,

Those planning on attending Loretta's hike should meet tonight at 6pm at
Sheri-Punja, and Indian Restaurant beside Osco Drug at Park Ave. and Grant.

-Hanna is interested in doing a backpacking trip over 4th of July weekend
in Southern Colorado. It would be 2-3 days depending on everyone's schedule.
This is a trip that could be coordinated with a road trip and other hiking
excursions as there are many areas on the drive up through N. Arizona, S.
Utah and Colorado that offer various recreational opportunities. More details
will be provided once interest has been expressed. Contact Hanna at
haacoy@yahoo.com.

-Steve is planning some trip for the future. One includes a short backpack
up Sabino Canyon and down another canyon, in two weeks. Another is a
canyoneering trip to Mystery Canyon in Zion National Park. This trip will occur in late
June. Be on the lookout for more information.

-Curvin will be spending the entire summer exploring Alaska. If you would
like to spend any amount of time hiking, camping, and exploring Alaska this
summer, and you can transport yourself to Seward's Folly (the state of Alaska)
please feel free to check out Curvin's website and contact him to set up
some trips. www.redundancydept.com.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-Next Tuesday, May 27, Hanna and Georgio will be celebrating their
birthdays with a cookout at Himmel Park. The fun will begin around 6pm and they will
have a beer permit. Hanna is bringing some veggies to throw on the grill
but you need to provide your own choice of meat. They will also set up a
Volleyball net and a bocce ball game. Guests are allowed. For more info contact
