Minutes for Meeting of 06-04-2003
HOWDY RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room
307.
-Our new meeting place is the rock wall across the street from the
east side of Tyndall Parking Garage. Here is a map of the location
http://clubs.arizona.edu/~ramblers/wall.html
-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from our meeting
place.
PAST HIKES:
Steve and Chad went on an overnight backpack through Sabino and Bear
Canyons in the Catalinas. Got on the trail by 7am, made it to the East
Fork of Sabino by 11:30. Found a nice shaded pool a few hundred yards
down the East Fork and hung out there all afternoon to "enjoy the
heat". This means doing things that are fun when it's hot, like jumping
in cold pools and lying in the shade. Steve hiked down to the proposed
site of a dam in the 20s or 30s, and found an awesome pool over 10 ft
deep and cool rocks to jump off of and sunbathe. Chad went up the West
Fork towards Hutch's Pool and found some nice pools to cool off in.
After dinner we hiked up the East Fork and across Bear Canyon Trail,
arriving at a campsite around 9:30p, just before the trail drops into
Bear Canyon. Awoke next morning to find a awesome cliff to rappel down.
First site was over 200 feet (had to pull the ropes back up, not
enough) and eventually wend down a 180 ft crack in the middle of the
drainage. Plan was to canyoneer down Bear Canyon to 7 Falls, but the
water was almost still and we couldn't see any major drops while we
hiked the trail. This section of Bear would definitely be a great swim
pack because it is full of pools, even now. Look for a swimpack later
in the summer from Steve. We stopped at 7 falls for a quick dip (saw 2
tame ducks and a lot of fish eyeing us through the water for food) and
hiked out by 2p. We ended up lugging 550 ft of rope 14 miles for one
rappel, but it was worth it.
Steve Nicolosi hiked around Palisade Canyon and mistook an orienteering
course setter for a Turkey, or some other wild animal. Also saw parts
of Pine Canyon, which had no flowing water in it.
Hong Qi and Andreas hiked on top of Mt. Lemmon, on the Aspen Trail and
Lemmon Lookout Trail. Saw the little house on the rock where the ranger
hangs out.
FUTURE HIKES:
- Steve's hike this weekend:
Come to Lemmon Pools on top of Mt. Lemmon for a relaxing hike and cool
dip in the waters of Lemmon Creek. Hike is 4 miles each way, not much
elevation change. A little scrambling at the end, plus a steep descent
into Lemmon Creek. Meet at the Wall at 9am this Sunday. Bring lunch,
sun protection, 2 liters of water and some money for gas. We should
return before dinner, no later than 5pm. Pics from a previous trip:

- Steve's Weeklong Canyoneering trip to Southern Utah RSVP:
If you like canyoneering, here's a trip for you. We will spend 1 week
driving across southern Utah taking in some of the nicest canyons in
the region including Antelope, Zion, Mystery, Subway, Paria and
possibly Buckskin. See links at bottom for more info. Canyons in Zion
are subject to availablility, but the trip is set up to take advantage
of the walk-in permits so I'm confident we will be able to do at least
2 technical canyons in Zion.
Contact Steve at sanewcomb@yahoo.com
Tentative schedule:
WED: Leave early, stop and see Antelope Canyon near Page, on to Zion
THUR: Wake early to get permit to Mystery. Day hike Zion Narrows.
FRI: Mystery Canyon. Drive to Paria.
SAT: Hike Down Paria from Whitehouse Trailhead, Camp near Buckskin
Gulch.
SUN: Hike either up Buckskin or down Paria.
MON: Hike out of Paria, drive back to Zion.
TUE: Wake early, get permit for Subway or, if I get permit early, do
Subway. Drive to Goldstrike Hotsprings for evening.
WED: Subway or Drive Home.
Canyoneering requires rope skills for rappelling, some equipment
including a harness and descending device, swimming and comfort
climbing down and around rocks and boulders. The reward is seeing some
unbelieveable rock formations and places that can't be seen any other
way. Check out the photos on Tom's website below to see the beauty.
If you have a rope, or can take a vehicle, include that in your email.
Please let me know as soon as possible as I need to order the permits
for Paria (before they're gone!) and try to get the ones for Zion.
Cheers, Steve

- Hanna is interested in doing a backpacking trip over 4th of July
weekend in Southern Colorado. It would be 2-3 days depending on
everyone's schedule. This is a trip that could be coordinated with a
road trip and other hiking excursions as there are many areas on the
drive up through N. Arizona, S. Utah and Colorado that offer various
recreational opportunities. More details will be provided once interest
has been expressed.
