Minutes for Meeting of 09-10-2003

WELCOME BACK RAMBLERS-
-Ramblers meet every Wednesday at 5pm in the Forbes Bldg. in room
307.

-Our new meeting place is the rock wall across the street from the
east
side of Tyndall Parking Garage. Here is a map of the location
http://clubs.arizona.edu/~ramblers/wall.html

-Don't worry if you don't have a car. We carpool from our meeting
place.

PAST HIKES:

-Cliff explored a section of the Tucson Mountains last Saturday near the
Desert Museum. He began on the King Canyon Trail but took to the wash and saw
some petroglyphs. He then hiked on to Gould Mine and explored some mine shafts.

-John hiked up Mt.Wrightson on Saturday to come upon a very cloudy view. He
also noted that the top parking lot is closing for six months for repaving.
People can still access Mt. Wrightson, but they must use as different appraoch
or hike a mile or so up the road from the lower parking lot.

-Joe and a group of Ramblers hiked up Mt. Wrightson on Sunday. They took
the
Gardner Canyon approach and were met at the peak with a lightening storm. This
inspired a bit of trail running as they descended the mountain.

-Dr. Birky hiked along the Butterfly Trail in the Catalinas two weeks ago.
He believes that this trail may be the highest one open. There was some water
flowing and the monsoons had encouraged wildflower growth in the older burned
section. Last weekend Dr. Birky hiked the David Yetman Trail in Tucson Mountain
Park. The wildflowers were flourishing there as well.

-Rachel took a short hike up Wassen Peak recently and sat down beside a
rattlesnake. She went early in the morning and enjoyed the way the light looked
on the Ocotillos.

-Jenn went backpacking through the Sierra Nevadas over the summer. Besides
enjoying the beauty of the wilderness she also helped to maintain some trails
and clean up fire-rings.

-Rachel toured five National Parks over her summer vacation. Her favorites
were the Grand Teton NP and Zion.

FUTURE HIKES:

-Joe's Hike: I'm planning either one of two hikes on Sunday...
Meet at 8 am on the east side of the Tyndall Ave Garage (free parking),
near "The Wall" (on the north east corner of the Tyndall/South campus
drive intersection). We'll do one of two hikes: either the Butterfly Trail up
in
the Catalinas, from the upper parking lot to the waterfall (cascade is probably
a better description), or up Sabino Canyon to Esperero Falls. Both hikes are
"B"s on the Sierra Club ranking scale, not more than 8 miles round trip and
fairly level.Bring 3 liters of water, food, and something to swim in, and
sunscreen. If you have a car, please bring it. Likewise bring your Mt. Lemmon
Pass if you've got one. Most likely we'll vote on Sunday to see who'd prefer
which hike...

    - Steve's Overnight Trip:
Hi All, this is a second posting of a trip this weekend. Just wanted to
add that access to this canyon may be closed starting in October for up
to 4 years during construction of the Hoover Dam bypass. Might be your
last time to see it for some time.
Come see one of the most spectacular canyons in the southwest and spend
the weekend exploring its many wonders from hotsprings to waterfalls to
river fun to a sauna cave and a hot "shower" shooting directly out of a
wall. We will leave Friday at 4pm, drive to the Hacienda Casino (the
best place to leave the cars) and hike down the canyon to the
hotsprings under moonlight, which will take about one hour. After
enjoying the springs in the morning we will continue down the canyon,
seeing several waterfalls, pools and large boulder piles to climb down.
There is no technical climbing, but several areas where rope lines are
used. The heat of the day will be spent playing in and around the cool
water of the Colorado River. Back to the hotsprings for a second
evening of good food, talk (well, hopefully) and relaxation. Head out
of the canyon by 10 am the next morning and if people are interested,
there is an all you can eat buffet at the Hacienda for $4.99. Return to
Tucson by evening. This is an RSVP outing to make sure there is space, so email
me if you are interested and for more details. sanewcomb@yahoo.com
