Minutes for Meeting of 09-24-2003
HELLO RAMBLERS!
FUTURE HIKES:
1) Will wants to go to Bridal Wreath falls this Sunday, which hopefully will now
be flowing. We'll meet at 9:30 so nobody has to get up before 9. This is a very nice,
easy hike on part of the Douglas Springs trail, and there's a semi-secret canyon
on the way which might have a swimming hole if I can locate it again... If the
heat comes back this trail will be too hot and I would be open to doing something
cooler like the Butterfly Trail on Mt. Lemmon, or Tanque Verde. At any rate,
necessary items are the usual water, sun protection, lunch, and decent footwear.
Contact Will at [williamnelson@EARTHLINK.NET]
2) Dan will lead a hike to 7 Falls on Saturday to see the falls after all the rain.
Meet at the Bear Canyon Parking Lot at 8 am. Email Dan at [dcarroll@email.arizona.edu]
for directions. If you need a ride from campus, email Matt at [mwhitney@u.arizona.edu]
and plan to be at the wall at 7:30am.
3) Steve might lead a swimpack from Sycamore Dam to 7 Falls this weekend if other
plans fall through. Watch the listserv for announcements.
4) Steve is planning an expedition on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for either
October or next spring. A rugged 50 mile hike over 9 days, the trip is not for
everyone. If you have advanced backcountry skills and can operate independently,
see Steve at a meeting or on one of his hikes to talk about it.
5) Hanna is looking into renting a U van or truck for a trip to Pinacate, Mexico
over a long weekend, possibly over the Martin Luther King weekend Jan 17-19, 2004.
More info later.
PAST HIKES:
1) Joe led a group of Ramblers to Tanque Verde Falls last Sunday.
2) Matt hiked to Seven Falls on Saturday. The water was kind of cold.
3) Andrew hiked in the Sedona area last summer visiting Slide Rock,
hiking up the river, around the desert and over to a vortex. It was hot.
4) Karen hiked south of the bay area this summer. 12 miles through
redwood trees, across streams with large waterfalls, in the Big Basin area.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Steve will hold a workshop for using the club's GPS:
Last spring the club bought a Garmin Gecko 201 GPS (Global Positioning
System) which is available for members to use. I plan to give a
workshop to share what I've learned about using it and mapping
software. Some of the topics will be:
* How to find your location on a map
* How to record where you have hiked
* How to use it in the car
* How to upload/download tracks and waypoints
* How to plan a route, upload and follow it
* How to use it to backtrack
* GPS and the Gecko's limitations
If you are interested, email me at [sanewcomb@yahoo.com] and
provide a few days of the week that would work for you. It will
be in the evening, preferably during the week (so the weekend
is open for fun stuff, like using it!).
